Dancing is a great measuring stick for how connected you are to your higher self. I don’t mean having skills or looking like Fred Astaire and being able to float on the dance floor as a requirement of authenticity, but instead I refer to just dancing “like nobody’s watching”.
Let’s peel that onion a little bit.
Like nobody’s watching.
The assumption there is that if other people are watching, then we can’t show our true selves and we need to modify our behavior because we are seeking approval for who we are and how we feel.
In other words, we are not content with just knowing that however we feel is perfect because that’s how we feel instead we’re asking others “ Is it OK for me to feel this way?”.
How could somebody else answer that for you?
Just like, how could somebody else tell you how you should dance as a form of personal individual expression in the generous present moment of now.
The reality of this life experience is that the more self-love and acceptance we can provide ourselves the more we can relax into this human experience and simply enjoy it and stay present for it.
Nobody outside of us knows everything that we’ve been through our thoughts or feelings in our experiences so how could we ever look for approval from other people about how we should feel and act. They don’t have the information to be able to have an informed opinion about us like we do about us.
One memory I have from marriage counseling with the mother of my kids, and Dr Bruce was when he was working backwards in a timeline to my sobriety from alcohol, which at that time was about four years, and he said to me quite matter-of-factly that “I was just figuring out what makes me happy as an adult human being”.
That struck me right between the eyes because it made me realize that I truly am starting over in terms of my conscious experience and how I’m perceiving my reality.
There isn’t anything more fundamental than that. Putting on a new set of sunglasses that completely changes your view I would say is newsworthy for you personally.
This is where the incredible emerging science of neuroplasticity comes in and our own ability to take that gray matter, that malleable ball of clay that is our mind, and reshape it into something that is more attractive or perhaps more functional from the health and wellness standpoint going forward.
Furthermore, you will become ill if you stifle your personal expression.
Let me repeat that: you will make your physical organism sick when you don’t express the emotions and feelings that you were experiencing in your heart mind and body. Many people experience throat, illnesses, thyroid issues, dental issues, other things associated with the neck and mouth when they fail to honor their higher self and express their true feelings.
Yes, dancing can be a spiritual practice that connects people to a higher power, or to a sense of well-being.
Explanation
Connection to the divine: Dance can be a way to connect with the divine or a higher power. For example, in some Christian and Islamic traditions, dance is used to express a relationship with God.
Channel for life force: Dance can be a way to channel a life force or energy that flows through the body.
Emotional expression: Dance can be a way to express emotions and release tension.
Connection with others: Dance can be a way to connect with others and create a sense of community.
Body-mind connection: Dance can help people become more aware of their bodies and the connection between their body, emotions, and mind.
Therapeutic: Dance can be a form of therapy that provides emotional support.
Conversely, healing happens when talking and expression are free flowing and not being stifle regulated or reviewed prior to just letting it flow.
This is where you will need to surround yourself with people that understand the importance of expression and communication and are there for you to listen and support you and you will do the same with them periodically so that everybody feels comfortable expressing themselves amongst your friend group or tribe.
You are better off being by yourself than being with a friend that doesn’t allow you to express yourself or encourage your true personality and vibe to flow.
Dancing is just one form of expression and you might feel the urge to draw or to paint or to write anything at all that allows you to express creativity or to communicate thoughts and feelings is perfect.
Do that.
Big day of golf out at the Ritz-Carlton and this morning was one of the coldest mornings. I can remember here in Sarasota with temperatures dipping down into the 30s so I will be layered up like the Michelin man and probably end up looking like the little brother from Christmas story with a scarf and a snowsuit on trying to play golf today.
I’ll be smiling and laughing the whole time, music playing and I know I’ll hit a few great shots. Those few good ones will keep me coming back and that’s my attitude of gratitude.
