Morning Platitude from The GratiDude

It doesn’t matter what chunk of life or period you want to look at, however, it’s become clear to me that life is what happens in between the times that you are planning your life. In other words, you’re real life is a complete mystery, an unknown and a daily reveal that at best works out in a general sense to what we had in mind, but more times than not we end up somewhere completely different than where we started.

It could even be just a single day, when something happens that we didn’t plan for, and the rest of the day must accommodate and accept flexibility, because there is no choice.

You could have something planned outdoors and wake up and find out that the weather has shifted, and that rain is imminent. There’s nothing you could have done to prevent this and even if you stayed up all night last night worrying about rain, it wouldn’t have changed the weather patterns or how the clouds were moving so you’re better off just getting some sleep anyway.

There are also serious situations that pop up when we have a desire to do something in our life but we have a health challenge that limits us. This is a great reminder that when you’re healthy, you can imagine lots and lots of problems that you have. However, if you get the news that you have a serious illness suddenly all those other problems disappear and you only have one problem and that’s how to get healthy.

It’s very cool that this kid here in the video left his ringer on for just his mom and nobody else, which the coach was in on, obviously. Here’s a wonderful example of how life can hand you a detour, or a surprise out of nowhere that is more beautiful and wonderful than you ever could’ve imagined. This kid could’ve been thinking about what job he was going to do in the off-season to help pay for his room and board to support his passion play in college football. Now, he doesn’t have to worry about that because he just earned himself a scholarship and I guarantee you this is not the way that he thought his day would end up.

This is a great perspective to keep in mind as you begin each day and to remember that at all of the days when you had wonderful surprises and good news; a promotion at work perhaps you’ve met a new friend, you figured out a tough problem that you have been trying to solve, had a breakthrough conversation with one of your children, any of those awesome life experiences were not planned or four told when you got up in the morning.

The point here is to embrace the unknown that is something scary, or the bogeyman or like going into a dark cave, but instead as the factual reality of how your life happens.

When you can only control your own behavior and your own movements throughout the universe, how in the world do you think you could ever control everything that happens to you when there’s 7.4 billion other people out there living a completely unique life experience? Our realities are bound to intersect or add some variables and complications to the plans that you have in your little mind.

I had the realization as I ran into my divorce lawyer Angela on Friday evening walking downtown in Sarasota. She’s an awesome woman and very kind and it was really cool to bump into her because obviously the universe wanted me to have contact with her and to give me the opportunity to share my appreciation directly with her.

This is a great example of something that was very scary to me going into it, divorce, and I didn’t know how my kids were going to come out of it, and how we were going to make it to the other side, emotionally, and I was not clear on how to pursue some of the career moves and changes that I had made about 18 months ago when I first met Angie who became my lawyer.

Its cool to look back and see how everything is worked out, not necessarily how I imagined, because I didn’t even have enough imagination to figure that out, however, in a completely unique way, that I never would’ve predicted. And everything is great, and everybody is OK and we made it.

Yes, being open to change is considered good for your health, as it can promote personal growth, adaptability, resilience, and can even help reduce stress by allowing you to navigate life’s challenges more effectively; embracing change can lead to a more positive mindset and improved overall wellbeing.

Key points about the benefits of being open to change:

Mental health:

Adapting to change helps you develop coping mechanisms and resilience against life’s difficulties, potentially reducing anxiety and stress levels.

Personal growth:

Embracing change allows you to learn new skills, explore new perspectives, and expand your horizons, leading to personal development.

Physical health:

Positive lifestyle changes, like adopting healthier eating habits or starting an exercise routine, can significantly improve physical health when embraced with an open mind.

Career advancement:

Being open to change in the workplace can lead to new opportunities for learning, promotion, and career growth.

However, it’s important to remember that:

Managing change:

While being open to change is beneficial, sudden or overwhelming changes can still cause stress.

Individual needs:

The pace and nature of change should be tailored to your individual needs and comfort level.

Seeking support:

If you struggle with significant life changes, seeking professional guidance can help you manage the transition effectively.

I’m encouraging you to get comfortable with surrendering control and realizing that we can control things like our own attitude and our decision making at every moment, however, there are big currents of energy and billions of other actors out there performing on the same stage that we are performing on.

We are bound to bump into each other occasionally because choreography is left up to the performers on this stage, which we call the life experience of human beings.

This morning I’m going to be playing the role of a golfer with my good friends from Heritage Golf out there at Lakewood Ranch, and using the opportunity of playing today for all of the micro meditation windows, that I will enjoy, and to play under the spirit of the quiet caddy, observing nature, and connecting during the walks in between shots. My favorite part of golf is the walking in between the shots(unless I had a really awesome shot or made a really long putt and then it would be the shot or the putt but other than that it’s the walk).

Lastly, when your plans change, and you get thrown a curveball, just smile and laugh and realize that God and the universe have a tremendous sense of humor, and they may take you on the circuitous path, but it’s always for a good reason with lessons to learn and new experiences to be had, and that’s your attitude of gratitude.
