Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
What are some of the greatest compliments that you could pay somebody or that you have ever been paid?
On the last day of sixth grade at Eberwhite just like the last day of every school every year for all the grades before that, the school held an end-of-the-year ceremony and official dismissal for Summer. The ceremony would take place in a grassy area by the front door of the school where the flagpole was and the Star-Spangled Banner flew every morning. I can’t recall all the details of it, but I do remember the energy and the giddy almost intoxicated anticipation of all the kids was nothing short of electric for us.
My elementary school even had its own song that was overly dramatic and almost college-like in its reverence for our little elementary school.
Sample lyrics from this catch diddy:
“Books, classes, pencils, and pens, then we all go home again. Raise a flag for Eberwhite so dear.
The woods, the trees, the leaves that fall.
O Eberwhite we call, Eberwhite, so dear”
I know it’s disturbing that I can remember stuff like this from the late 70s, but don’t worry…..in a business setting I’ll forget someone’s name or an important piece of data or fail to mention something that may have closed the deal.
I can tell you what happened on the playground back at Eberwhite in 1975 though so I got that going for me. Which is nice.
On the last day of sixth grade after the ceremony and singing was done, and the kids started to scatter in all different directions, I approached our beloved principal, Mr. Riggs to give him one last goodbye.
Mr. Riggs was a friend of the family and little did I know a handful of years later I would see him again and my father’s memorial service after my dad took his own life in 1984.
Today, however, was the day of celebration, and Mr. Milton Riggs grabbed me by the shoulders unexpectedly crouched down a little bit and looked me right in the eyes unexpectedly and told me:
“Kevin, if I were ever to have another son, I would want him to be just like you.”
Holy fuck Milton, I didn’t see that coming!
Yes, giving compliments can be good for your health, as research suggests it boosts mood, strengthens relationships, and increases stress resilience, creating a ripple effect of positivity.
Here’s a more detailed look at the benefits:
For the Giver:
Increased Happiness and Well-being:
Studies show that engaging in random acts of kindness, like giving compliments, can reliably increase personal well-being.
Improved Mood and Energy Levels:
Giving compliments can make both the giver and receiver feel better, boosting mood and energy.
Strengthened Interpersonal Relationships:
Compliments can build relationships, improve communication, and foster a sense of connection.
Increased Stress Resilience and Physical Health:
The act of giving compliments can contribute to a more positive and resilient mindset, which can positively impact physical health.
Practicing Gratitude:
Giving compliments can help you practice gratitude and notice the good in others, leading to a more positive outlook.
Empowerment:
Giving compliments can empower others and create a dynamic where you are lifting up those around you.
For the Receiver:
Boosted Self-Esteem and Confidence: Compliments can reinforce positive behaviors and motivate people, boosting self-esteem and confidence.
Improved Performance: Receiving compliments can improve performance, even in tasks done a day later.
Increased Motivation: Compliments can serve as a powerful tool for recognition, affirming efforts and contributions, and fostering a positive environment.
Feeling Valued and Appreciated: Receiving compliments can make people feel valued, appreciated, and seen.
Strengthened Relationships: Compliments can strengthen bonds and enhance relationships.
God works through people and I know now this was God‘s way of throwing me an extra emotional bone and extra layer of love from a man because the well of love from my father was about to go dry, and I would never be able to draw from that bucket again.
This was the last summer of innocence for me and my brother, but I didn’t know it at the time.
And I didn’t know why the comment from Mr. Riggs shook me so much even after that time and that I knew there was something about what he had said that I would never forget.
But I didn’t know why it would be so impactful.
I had already begun to seek out approval and love from other healthy grown men outside of my father because I wasn’t getting what I wanted or what I felt I needed and my higher-self knew what was coming from the relationship with my dad.
I’ve only come to realize this over the last year and that’s that there was just an inability for Arthur E. Carpenter to get in touch with his own emotions so he could be more present and thoughtful in his relationships.
My relationship with my dad was simply like other relationships he had that would plateau emotionally due to an inability to get vulnerable in real life from an emotional and spiritual perspective because my dad was so unhealthy and jammed up in those regards.
I’ve mentioned this before and other posts but a wonderful thing you could say to friends, family, and especially to your children is to tell them one thing you love about them the most.
Watch what happens when you start out your comment with “you know what I love the most about you?”
And their eyes will open and they will turn their head and look right at you eagerly anticipating what comes next.
This costs you nothing what can deliver $1 million feeling to the person who is on the other end of this complement and elevates the vibration of the entire room that you were in at that time.
These are practical tools and approaches and mindset that create more present moment, awareness for you and more feelings of love and unity in your community.
I love March madness so I’m going to watch some hoop later today and I hope everyone hits a winning three pointer from a mindset perspective today with nothing but net and an attitude of gratitude.
