Logos.

In the beginning, there was the word.

And the Word was God.

Logos is the Greek word for reason or order that is the literal translation of “the word” in its original form.

I remember Nancy Brown explaining that to us in a big lecture hall with 100 kids in it at Cabrillo junior college in Aptos, California about 35 years ago. Nancy and OG surfer who used to hang with the Beatniks at City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco back in the early mid 60s still got out into the water regularly and her grayish blue eyes sparkled when she talked about some of the key foundational thoughts in western or eastern philosophy.

I hadn’t yet learned about the power of language on our own conscious reality and how intertwined it is with our own consciousness and human experience as we know it, as I had not yet been introduced to any specifics of neuroscience outside of what I had learned from people like Muhammad Ali and Tony Robbins was just coming into the scene. These were a few early Pioneers of being nice to yourself and elevating yourself through your own internal dialogue and self-talk.

We don’t necessarily speak things into existence in a literal fashion, however, affirmations and positive self-talk, creates an alignment to our thinking and subsequent behavior. This is why the concept of speaking things into existence came to become a cherished cliché is because from a probability standpoint, the more you talk about something happening or becoming real the more likely your behaviors and actions will contribute to manifesting that reality. Your “Reticular Activating System” is what makes this happen FYI.

I noticed when speaking to a young friend the other day that he said out loud three times in the span of a few minutes that he was “jammed up” and not feeling good. “I’m just jammed up”….. so, his energy and his mind and his body is listening and saying OK “we’re jammed up. I got it. We’re jammed up. Let’s not flow at all. Let’s not relax. Let’s be jammed up OK jammed up.”

My point here is that even if you are feeling slightly jammed up, saying you’re jammed up is just going to make you more jammed up.

You can start feeling less jammed up by simply saying:

“I feel my feet being supported by the Earth and the ground, and I am taking deep breaths and I am thankful to be here. I am connected to the Earth, I am breathing deeply, and I am alive.”

Repeat repeatedly until you believe this from your head to your feet.

Within a few minutes, you won’t be telling yourself you’re jammed up, because you won’t be anymore.

See how this works?

The world you see outside and what you were experiencing is a direct mirror like reflection of your thoughts and emotions that are happening inside yourself. It is impossible to have thought awareness and to properly audit or survey your own thoughts until you become connected to your breath. We all experience feelings of being disconnected from our breath that may result in anxiety or uneasy feelings, and it is critical that we are kind and give ourselves grace to come back because that is the process of mindfulness and growth is just how quickly you can come back.

Yes, speaking nicely to yourself, or practicing positive self-talk, can significantly contribute to your overall wellness by fostering a more positive outlook, reducing stress and anxiety, and boosting self-esteem.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

Positive Self-Talk and its Benefits:

Improved Mental Health: Positive self-talk can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety and improve overall well-being.

Enhanced Self-Esteem: Replacing negative self-talk with kind and encouraging words can lead to a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.

Stress Management: Redirecting negative thoughts towards the positive can help manage stress and improve emotional regulation.

Improved Performance: Positive self-talk can enhance focus, motivation, and performance, especially during challenging situations.

Better Relationships: When you treat yourself with kindness, you’re more likely to extend that same kindness to others, fostering stronger relationships.

Increased Motivation: Positive self-talk can help you stay motivated and persistent in pursuing your goals.

Improved Cognitive Function: Self-talk can help improve cognitive performance such as concentration and visual processing.

How to Practice Positive Self-Talk:

Identify Negative Thoughts: Become aware of the negative self-talk you engage in.

Challenge Negative Thoughts: Question the validity of negative thoughts and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.

Use Affirmations: Repeat positive and encouraging statements about yourself.

Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend.

Focus on Strengths: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments and positive qualities.

Talk to Yourself in the Third Person: Some people find it helpful to speak about themselves in the third person (e.g., “She is doing a great job”) to create distance and perspective.

It’s a Process:

Changing your self-talk takes time and practice, but it’s a worthwhile effort that can have a significant impact on your overall well-being.

Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories along the way.

This is what Novak speaks of here:

If you aren’t capable of taking long deep breath at a moment’s notice, and aren’t able to down shift quickly from an active mind to a calm one, you are missing out on an ocean of calmness and contentment that is waiting for you and available when you stay connected to your own breath.

Let us give you the basic tools if you are in need and these are the gifts that will last a lifetime.
