Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
The consensus on the odds of scoring a hole-in-one while playing golf for about 12,000 to one. This means that nobody ostensibly sets out when they play golf with the Express intent of scoring a hole-in-one or the upcoming round of golf will be an utter failure if that was your criteria or definition of success your odds of ever reaching that goal would be very slim the message here is that golf like life is about enjoying the process and not being fixated or dependent on the outcome for you .
Can you imagine if you played golf a couple of times a week so about 100 times a year you would finish up your round of golf and declare it a failure? Forget about all the laughter and the exercise and the connection to nature the meditative practice of attempting to hit good golf shots the camaraderie all of that is secondary because you didn’t get that hole-in-one. It’s a big L for the day a waste of time and you should’ve just gone bowling.
However, when you approach life and golf with a growth perspective, every swing, and even every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. It’s totally cool to fall a little bit short and just enjoy the process and the pursuit of your own personal greatness. When you have this type of a growth perspective that is rooted in gratitude, facilitates a mindset by forcing you to look at all of your practices and experiences as either a lesson or a blessin’ that will be coming down the road.
This is also the same perspective that allows you to be excited about jumping out of bed on a Monday morning and to hopefully keep you from ever having regret about anything that you’ve scheduled on your calendar or a meeting that you need to attend.
It’s important you are honest with yourself however because if you do find yourself consistently with things in your calendar and schedule that you really don’t enjoy or that make you uncomfortable. You have to ask yourself why and start understanding what it is that you are truly after during this short life experience.
More times than that when you’re feeling a lot of stickiness or discomfort in the things that you have scheduled around your work life, it could just mean that you’re misaligned relative to your higher self in your natural disposition and to the job that you have taken on out of a need to provide and support yourself and perhaps your family.
I’ve become much more sensitive to this through my introduction to TypeCoach in my work with Rob Toomey, the president and founder and I continue to learn more and more all the time about how important it is for us to understand our hard wiring so to speak so that we can be put onto the right seat on the bus.
Rob and I had dinner a few months back with some golf industry folks and a C-level executive for a management company that overseas numerous golf courses realize that there is a big gap between his natural personality, the one that he utilizes at home with his friends and family, and loved ones, and the personality that he utilizes at work.
In his work life, he is a command and control leader that relies on hierarchy and very little interpersonal communication, chitchat, and things of that nature. And it’s totally cool when you find yourself in those misaligned situations, however it’s critical that you tap in to your own self-love and be honest in terms of whether or not you need to look for a different seat on the Bus within your organization or simply modify the personality you’re utilizing and to be more natural and authentic in your work personality so it matches up with your natural personality.
Those are really you’re only two options. Otherwise, it could be long and torturous to be sitting in the wrong seat on the bus and being asked to do something every day that is not aligned with your passions and true interest.
Yes, having a job that doesn’t align with your personality can significantly impact your health, potentially leading to stress, burnout, and even physical symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and digestive issues, as the constant strain of acting outside your natural tendencies can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being; essentially, “making you sick” over time if not addressed.
Key points to consider:
Stress and Anxiety:
When you’re constantly trying to adapt to a work environment that doesn’t suit your personality, it can lead to high levels of stress and anxiety, which can manifest physically.
Burnout:
Feeling like you’re constantly “performing” in a role that doesn’t align with your natural strengths can lead to exhaustion and burnout, impacting your overall health and productivity.
Low Job Satisfaction:
A mismatch between your personality and job demands can lead to a lack of fulfillment and motivation, further exacerbating stress and negative emotions.
Impact on Relationships:
Work stress can also spill over into your personal life, affecting relationships with family and friends.
What to do if you feel your job is affecting your health:
Self-reflection:
Assess whether your current role aligns with your strengths and interests.
Talk to your manager:
Discuss potential adjustments to your role to better suit your personality.
Career Counseling:
Seek professional guidance to explore career options that better fit your personality and skills.
Prioritize self-care:
Engage in activities that help manage stress and promote overall well-being.
I know now that there are people that are in accounting doing “bean counting” over there and really have the skills and the talent and the desire to do “rain making” and be in sales. They just have not had the opportunity or applied for a sales position before. These people need to get on over to HR and get a plan in motion so they can give that a shot.
It’s tough when we’re pursuing financial stability, especially when we expand our responsibilities and have kids. It’s easy to lose track of being connected to the things we enjoy. However, we can’t be the best versions of ourselves and remain happy and healthy if we’re doing things that make us miserable. We owe it to our friends and family to align ourselves properly so that we can be healthy 24 hours a day and not just on the weekends when we are away from work.
Enjoy your Sunday process and keep focused on the fact that you won the lottery again today and you have another ticket to ride along with the rest of us here in the living family.
Back to work like Captain Kirk for everybody tomorrow, so lean into this Sunday and slow it down because that’s an attitude of gratitude.
