Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
I had a wonderful experience a few years ago when I took a yoga class on New Year’s Eve. It was illuminated by candlelight, and it had a lot of positive energy and intentionality going into it.
I remember it was a Vinyasa flow class that was challenging yet there was plenty of wind down time at the end and some longer Yin poses that led to a very relaxed state by the end of class.
At the very conclusion, the Yogi instructor asked us to form a circle, and to do an end-of-the-year exercise that she had conjured up, and she placed a large basket in the middle of the circle.
The basket contains small pieces of paper and a series of pens of assorted colors and soon she explained what was going on.
We were going to take this opportunity while we were in this heightened state of awareness and vibrating in a beautiful way together to write our future self a note of encouragement so that we could remember this moment and what our intention is for the upcoming year.
My note to myself arrived sometime in late March and I didn’t know what the letter was when I opened it.
Here is what it said:
“ I love you unconditionally and you’re doing incredible things, and you are living an incredible life. I’m enormously proud of you! The thing that got us to this point was overcoming our fear and embracing our dreams and moving in the direction of abundance. Your key this year is less fear and bigger dreams.”
I was so excited when I opened this letter and realized when I saw the date and the handwriting that this was a letter from me to me!
Well golly, this never happened! I’ve received all sorts of letters in my life, love letters, certified letters from the IRS telling me I owe money even a letter from the Cincinnati Reds back in 1985 inviting me to a tryout for their major league baseball team. Letters can be good news bad news a waste of your time but you had better sit up straight and pay attention if and when you receive a letter from yourself.
It’s a healthy exercise to think about what kind of encouragement and things you would give yourself when you were feeling really good at a particular moment. Almost like bottling in an elixir to save for your future self to drink when they’re not feeling well or a pat on the back when you need it somewhere down the road.
It is a great reminder that we need to be our own Hype Squad, Cheerleader, Coach, Confidant, and BFF in this life experience and journey.
It’s also a good experience to think about what your old self would tell your current self today in terms of how you might change some things in your life in order to feel more satisfaction when you are old.
We know that the biggest cause of regret for old folks in their late years and days is not having lived a life true to their own spirit and personality, and instead of living a life based upon other people’s opinions and perspectives.
This is how you end up with regret.
Future thoughts are healthy when they are used to guide current behavior and to encourage dreaming and then goal setting.
Yes, thinking about your future self can be considered healthy as it can motivate you to make positive choices now, improve your well-being by providing a sense of purpose, and help you set goals to work towards a desired future version of yourself; however, dwelling excessively on negative future scenarios can be detrimental.
Key points about thinking about your future self:
Positive motivation:
Visualizing a positive future self can function as a motivator to make better decisions in the present.
Goal setting:
Imagining your future self can help you identify specific goals and aspirations to work towards.
Decision-making:
Considering your future self can help you evaluate choices based on their potential long-term impact.
Sense of purpose:
Thinking about your future can give your life a sense of meaning and direction.
When it can be unhealthy:
Excessive worry:
Constantly dwelling on negative future possibilities can lead to anxiety and stress.
Unrealistic expectations:
Setting overly ambitious or unrealistic goals about your future self can lead to disappointment.
Neglecting the present:
Focusing too much on the future can distract you from enjoying the current moment.
Living your life, even when it is messy and causes challenges and you experience mistakes, all of these are just part of the growth and the learning and the experience of your own life.
Let’s think about what know we would write our future self between now and the end of the year and then let’s also think about what our future self might tell us in terms of really getting after it or stepping up our own life today.
We can dance with our past self and future self, but we need to stay present in the moment and connected to our breath in order to experience our life in a healthy way that allows us to maintain and stay connected to our attitude of gratitude.
