Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
Yeah, I remember coming home after discovering a new pond over by Virginia Park in about second grade. John Collins was with me and I remember I got new shoes for school that week and I got them totally muddy when we got into the woods and we found a new pond that we didn’t realize was there.

Virginia Park, Ann Arbor, MI.
That wasn’t the only reason my mom would get upset with me, but of the two things I did, I think messing up the shoes was more upsetting because it had a bigger financial impact.
The other thing I did was find a plastic container around somewhere a garbage or something nearby and went back to the pond and filled it up with about 100 tadpoles that it just hatched in there. Somehow, I thought it would be a cool idea, visually appealing enjoyable for my family to look at a bowl of tadpoles much like an aquarium sits in an office or a room to add aesthetic value.
So I rushed home with my jug of tadpoles, and I found a really nice vase that was bold us in shape and would reveal the active swimming nature of our new tadpole family members.
I filled up the vase, and as soon as the water hit the bottom of the vase, all those little tadpoles started swimming around, feeling like they had landed at home, and I don’t know maybe relieved to be out of the plastic jug and into something a little bit more stable.
Little did they know my Dad was on his way home and there stay at our house was going to be very short lived.
For me, I was so blown away that there was a pond back here in the woods that we had never discovered in all of our adventures, rolling around the outskirts of Virginia Park. With some new houses being built and some inroads being made into the park, I believe we had access to a new little section that we had an explored thoroughly and it made us forget completely about anything else that we had planned and certainly any responsibilities we had to keep our “new shoes clean “as it was all about tadpoles in the pond at this point.
I was only about seven years old when this went down, and I was still really happy and connected to my day-to-day life and higher self and found joy and just the smallest things as I was always present and active and looking for the next stimulus or cool thing to excite me and take me in that direction.
Yes, research suggests that being present in the moment, also known as mindfulness, can significantly increase your experience of joy by allowing you to fully engage with the positive aspects of the current situation, rather than getting caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past; essentially, focusing on the “here and now” leads to greater happiness.
Key points about being present and joy:
Reduced mind wandering:
Studies show a strong correlation between happiness and the ability to stay present, as mind wandering (thinking about the past or future) often detracts from experiencing positive emotions in the moment.
Enhanced appreciation:
When you are fully present, you are more likely to appreciate the minute details and positive experiences that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Stress reduction:
Mindfulness practices that promote present-moment awareness can also help decrease anxiety and stress, further contributing to a feeling of well-being and joy.
When we stay open to the flow of our day-to-day life, we can see what’s being placed into our path to either help our journey or to give us enjoyment in the moment of now.
A good friend was just commenting yesterday that when you are connected to your breath and not anxiously thinking about things in your future or in your past the signs, like tadpoles and the new pond, appear right in front of you for YOU to take advantage of and to enjoy.
The comparison I use is the learning of a new word, because you learn a new word and suddenly it seems as if it’s appearing everywhere and everyone else learned it as well.
The harsh reality is that word has been in action and being used regularly and you either skipped over it or made up its meaning just to make yourself feel better in that moment subconsciously.
Now you see the word everywhere!
And when you get connected to your breath, you see the signs from something bigger than you leading you like breadcrumbs in the direction of your happiness, your joy and the pursuit of your own personal greatness.
Happiness is an inside and is a wasting.
What happened to the tadpoles?
Well, I placed the big fancy vase on the dining room table, right in the middle, like a bouquet of roses.
When my Dad got home and walked in with a gin n’tonic in a 70s style cool green plastic cup he about lost his shit.
“What is this swamp water doing on the goddamn dinner table??”
I was forced, then and there, to set those little critters free, and it wasn’t pretty.
Both me and the tadpoles were quite upset(I got over it, they didn’t).
Love and squeeze your friends and family closely this week and realize that we have the opportunity to make every single day a day of giving thanks by simply choosing thoughts of abundance by staying connected to the generous present moment of now.
Let’s lead in our families and our communities over the next few days and remind everyone to carry this energy and vibe forward throughout the year as we make every day the day to shine your attitude of gratitude.
