Forgive the mullet haircut and neon clothes, but I’m chilling back in the 80s a bunch these days. Word Up.

Morning Meditation from The GratiDude

The more I realize how technology, and specifically everybody having a computer in their pocket all the time, has moved everyone away from personal interaction and connecting to nature.

This is really bad news for all humans on the planet because it makes staying healthy emotionally physically spiritually much more difficult as there is a lot of interference available to prevent you from being in touch with your higher self.

Really good news for my organization and team of Sherpas and brilliant thought leaders is that business is going to be good for the foreseeable future because human beings are going to continue to be confused, filled with anxiety, have trouble sleeping, and constantly living in fear and worried about things that are way beyond their own control.

All of this adds up to an incredible business climate for personal coaching and personal development.

Everybody needs to start working on their PhD: PhD stands for Personal Human Development.

A few years back when my buddy Timmy from Ann Arbor was visiting and we are playing golf with his boys. He made it clear to me that I had a lot more PTSD from my teenage years that I had realized.

He was sharing this with me to be helpful and because he loves me and he helped me realize that I was having trouble remembering people that I had spent literally hundreds and hundreds of hours with. That’s not normal. These were people that I really cared about and loved at the time. I knew then that I had thrown “numerous babies out with the bathwater” in the hopes of avoiding thinking about much of the 1980s.

Now that I have opened my heart up in my mind and realized I need to integrate all of these memories, no matter how difficult, I have so much love for the 80s and nostalgia that it’s coming out of my ears right now.

And the music takes me back in time. Instantly! Just like certain smells, certain SONGS take me back like a time machine.

Like “Word Up” by Cameo(BTW, “Word Up” is a code word, apparently…..).

Music can trigger ALL types of memories AND trauma:

Memories

Music can trigger memories because it activates the hippocampus, the part of the brain that stores and retrieves memories. Music can also evoke intense memories from the past, more so than other senses. For example, people with dementia can have vivid memories triggered by music they heard when they were young.

Trauma

Music can trigger trauma in people with PTSD in a few ways:

State-dependent memory: If a person with PTSD experiences a sound or song that’s like a traumatic event, it can cause them to relive it.

Fight-or-flight response: A trigger like the traumatic event can activate the body’s fight-or-flight response.

Emotional activation: Music activates the amygdala and HPA-axis, which are areas of the brain related to stress and emotion

And Music can also bring joy and happiness, it is utterly amazing.

Specifically, music can trigger beautiful memories:

Evoking nostalgia: Music can transport listeners to past times and places and awaken associated emotions.

Bringing back forgotten memories: Music can help people with traumatic brain injuries or dementia recall special moments from their lives.

Creating a stronger bond: Couples who have a “special song” that connects them to a valuable time in their relationship may have a stronger bond.

Creating a sense of identity: Music interacts with every part of the brain, including the limbic system, hippocampus, and frontal lobe, which all bring back a sense of identity.

Creating detailed memories: Music can prompt more detailed memories than other stimuli.

Creating a feeling unique to a special time: Music can create a feeling unique to a special time in someone’s life.

Creating a sense of being transported: Music can make people feel transported.

Music-evoked autobiographical memories are a common experience that often occur involuntarily.

Music can also help people recall difficult or beautiful parts; however, all these experiences offer learnings much later, often when looked at with more age and wisdom.

And looking back at how folks DANCED together back in the 80s is something we must bring back!

Let’s boogie Peeps!

Just look at Rich and Krista right here!

Rich’s, hips and gyrations could power a small village in Guatemala if his pelvis were hooked up to a generator.

The dude is straight on fire. It looks like he must sprinkle cocaine or espresso beans on his frosted flakes in the morning with how fast that dude can move.

My message here is that you can never bury memories or make them go away as all of that energy is still present in your consciousness, and even in the genetic record in your body of having experienced all of the emotions and things a certain time period.

I am celebrating to help me in this process of healing our all of the names of people that have come back into my consciousness that I honestly never thought I would think or picture their faces in my mind ever again.

I got back on Facebook for the first time about 15 years, reconnecting with people from high school and all the way back to even elementary school(what’s up Beth Donnelly from Eberwhite?).

And I’m taking it all in as part of my healing process and celebrating my own survival, and the fact that I have forgiven myself for all of the things that were never really my fault to begin with.

Word up! In the words of Cameo, please don’t hesitate to share the fun in your body and  the love in your heart, the twinkle in your eye, and least of all your attitude of gratitude.
