Morning Meditation from The GratiDude

I was down to about three pairs of pants that fit me, so I had to have  one gray, one tan,  and one black pair.

The year was 2010, I was drinking every day, and I was fat (I weighed 50 lbs. more than I do know, 222 compared to 172 this morning).

Looking back on it,  the move from California to Sarasota in 2007 was a massive life shift and in hindsight, it felt like I was making a choice between pursuing my dreams which were represented in California, having moved out there when I was 19, and practicality business, and providing as a husband and now father in Florida.

When the mother of my kids and my oldest daughter and I arrived here from NorCal 17 years ago, the economic climate and Southwest Florida was much like Oklahoma dust bowl in the 1930s.  Most of downtown Sarasota was empty. Foreclosures were at an all-time high and this part of the United States was the epicenter for the housing bubble collapse.

I almost felt duped or tricked into moving back here because I really didn’t know how difficult the climate and situation was here in this part of country at that time.

First to crash and to rebound that is  the nature of the Sarasota real estate market for many up and down cycles,  according to most folks in the business.

When I think back on that time of my life, I have trouble understanding what my thoughts moment to moment must have looked like and just how anxiety filled my entire reality must have been.  

I can remember being up in the Vancouver area in 2008 for the GPSI deal we were working on and not having any Xanax to help me sleep and feeling a ton of anxiety, drinking to go to sleep and waking up in the middle of the night and feeling like shit every day, I was moving in an unhealthy direction physically and mentally.

And when you are surrounded by people that are not focused on a higher consciousness and longevity, health, and wellness, and instead you are rolling with folks that are focused on the less healthy energy exchange around money, your health and wellness will take a backseat.

The mother of my kids looked at me one morning and said the equivalent of you need to do something you fat bastard when she said “ when I met you, you used to like to run and exercise every day maybe you should get back into that”.

I looked at her and simply said “I got it. I’m fat as hell-message received.”

And the funny thing was that one of my first moves was to switch away from Beer and switch over to vodka and specifically my guy Tito.

I can laugh in hindsight now that my health move was to lower my caloric intake, not by drinking less, but by drinking more efficiently and switching over to what I like to call now the heroin of alcohol, vodka.

When you order double vodka with just a splash of soda and a piece of fruit, you are really telling yourself and the world that you are on the bullet train to a buzz and more likely headed directly to drunk town.

You subconsciously choose your squad, or consciously, to support or reinforce the path or direction that you wish to pursue.  At that time, my squad was all about enabling whatever alcohol or drug I was choosing at the time if I was participating as a key cog in the business, creating a sales organization and revenue for our investors and private equity.

It goes without saying that when you make a change in your life and become spiritual and discover your faith and your priority shift, it is almost impossible for all of your friends or very many of them at all to shift over with you and to be able to roll with your personal changes of lifestyle and faith.

That means that in between your old squad in your new squad, we will have a period of separation and a period of being alone, something I’m familiar with and have been understanding and experiencing over the last year or so.

I’m embracing it and understanding that this suffering is part of a healthy process even if it’s painful.  Just like working out, lifting weights, or running,  discomfort and soreness while seeking growth happens.  

When you take care of yourself, and your squad are doing the same, you help each other by encouraging each other to be healthy. The cool thing is that you will also have an opportunity to enjoy longevity together.  With supportive loving friends you have great company and it becomes fun to  keep your body, soul and mind moving in such a way that you can enjoy life well into your later years and be active golfing, hiking, dancing, and doing your thing.

And dancing is about the healthiest thing, along with yoga and sex, that Seniors could participate in safely for physical activity.

Yes, dancing can be particularly good for seniors in many ways, including:

Physical health

Dancing can improve strength, balance, and flexibility, and reduce the risk of falls. It can also improve cardiovascular health, posture, and mobility. 

Mental health

Dancing can improve cognitive ability, mood, and self-esteem. It can also help ward off dementia. 

Social life

Dancing can introduce you to like-minded people and encourage you to participate in group activities. It can also provide a space for self-expression and personal development. 

Dancing is considered a “triple-threat” option for older adults because it involves physical, mental, and social stimulation. It’s a wonderful way to practice a variety of movements, including standing on one foot, quickly changing directions, and shifting your weight from one foot to another. 

You can move at your own pace and take full advantage of the positive aspects of dancing.

Before you can think about improving the quality level of your squad, you must first improve the quality of your thoughts.  

For most of us, it’s extremely hard to improve the quality of our thoughts when we don’t have thought awareness on a regular basis.  

Awareness simply means that you are connecting to your breath and slowing down and being able to review your thoughts as they happen and choose to put energy into thoughts that serve you from a health and wellness standpoint and also find ways to release and let go of thoughts that are not healthy or  beneficial.

I’ve realized now that all my Coaching needs to begin in both group and one on one around fundamental concepts of breathing and thought awareness.

 

You simply can’t go on to things like meditation or other practices without first cultivating awareness and visibility around your personal patterns and inclinations and getting comfortable in some stillness.

Learning about your breath, understanding the differences between nose and mouth breathing, feeling the physical triggers that occur when your breath becomes out of rhythm or accelerated is fundamental to maintaining a slower pace to your thinking and your processing of your human experience.

I continue to seek out experts’ areas like modalities and benefits of breath work, neuroscience, ways to teach breath and movement, thought awareness activation, and even down to the granularity of building personal morning routines, and how experts have created efficient short programs for starting your day out as if you were launched out of a rocket ship.

We want to share this with everyone we can and we’re starting in the resort business because many of you work there, however, everything our Sherpas and Experts teach applies to every industry and every lifestyle.

I love doing yoga because it makes my spine feel so healthy and flexible and I now can learn salsa dancing because my hips have finally opened to the point where they don’t feel like cinderblocks when I try to move them.

I still have Willie Colon’s Fixer on speed dial up in the Big Apple and if I need to go back up to New York and connect with the King of Salsa, you know I Got a Guy that can make that happen.

One more reason  I’m shining on Phat Tuesday with an attitude of gratitude
