“Oh, you’re not really sick that’s just in your head”
Any of us that are older than about 30 years old heard this saying or cliché one million times growing up.
There were many similar sayings that were all basically dismissing somebody’s testimony of not feeling well, being ill, or having a real ailment as being purely fantasy. Because it’s really not happening in your body it’s in your imagination something separate from your body, which is your head that contains your brain and your mind and where your consciousness resides.
From a cultural/Philosophical perspective, the declaration from the French philosopher Descartes who is credited with the quote “I think, therefore I am” is what helped get us to this perspective, interestingly enough.
Many intellectuals and historians believe that this statement, equating THINKING with EXISTING was a big cultural stake in the ground that helped western civilizations believe and teach that the mind and the body were almost separate organisms that function independent of each other.
I know that sounds crazy in modern society or times to say, however the residuals of that the leaf system are ever present all around us and are offering leverage against us without our knowledge.
When something that we are feeling or experiencing is dismissed is being merely a form of cognitive dissonance, which is what people were saying when they said “it’s all in your head “, that is serious gaslighting, and extremely toxic to the person who is really experiencing something that is being dismissed or brushed off as being false or made up.
And when Willie says that negative thoughts poison your body, he’s not just being an old, stoned philosopher with a guitar on the hill. He’s talking real neuroscience and trying to help people out by being vulnerable, direct, and honest.
So I dedicate Willie’s video to you and know that if you want to feel great and get “on the road again” with an attitude of gratitude, it starts by connecting to your breath and then checking in on your thoughts and figuring out which thoughts serve you and which ones don’t.
Mindfulness and a daily routine and winning in the morning by starting your day on your own terms with gratitude and oxygen for your body is more than just “”woo-woo” or something that makes you feel good temporarily, it is a cornerstone for your physical well-being and for creating longevity so that you can experience more life and live longer.
Yes, thinking negative thoughts can indirectly impact your immune system by creating stress, which can lead to hormonal changes that weaken your body’s ability to fight off infections, essentially acting like a “toxin” to your immune system by causing chronic inflammation and disrupting its normal function; this is why managing stress through positive thinking and relaxation techniques is important for overall health.
Key points to remember:
Stress hormones:
When you experience negative thoughts, your body releases stress hormones like cortisol, which can suppress your immune system over time.
Chronic inflammation:
Persistent stress can lead to chronic inflammation throughout the body, which can further weaken your immune response and contribute to various health issues.
Impact on immune cells:
Studies have shown that chronic stress can affect the function and quantity of white blood cells, which are crucial for fighting infections
That’s real shit.
So, get on the bus and give yourself a checkup from the neck up and listen to the Sages and Philosophers like Willie Nelson that we have around us today while they are still here because that’s showing appreciation and attitude of gratitude.
