It’s interesting how all your taste and preferences change over time with your life experience and age.
The types of heroes and folks that I have exulted at different points in my life have changed from being sports heroes when I was a little kid, business, tycoons, and leaders when I was a young adult, to now looking for people that lead with love, kindness and compassion for others, and they are having significant positive impacts in their families and communities.
25 years ago, as I was getting going in business, I looked at people like Steve Jobs and other innovative dynamic business leaders as being cool role models without knowing anything or caring about how they behaved in their personal life or how they treated their employees, family, and friends.
It was simply a reflection of where my focus was, and where my thoughts were and my energy and everything was following those thoughts.
As a result of that, I started to get off center or out of connection with myself as deep down. I knew that my true calling had something to do with helping others. I just didn’t quite realize what that might be.
I never was a huge fan of the authoritarian business leader or the heavy-handed approach to management, so I wasn’t completely blinded by the need to be kind and compassionate. I just wasn’t quite as focused on what is fundamentally important, as my ego was getting a little bit swept away in the whole game of business and competition.
When I got off alcohol, I was able to think more clearly and get more connected to my higher-self, I got deep into yoga, and I was able to develop my meditation practice. Quickly the types of role models and heroes I gravitated to had changed and become much more specific.
For the unsung heroes like the people that spend their time, energy, and personal resources to make dreams come true, like allowing somebody canine to a wheelchair to surf for the first time in their life.
And the collective energy of celebration is the source of all love, light energy, and life would want us to be doing with our time and energy. Conducting such beautiful acts is a wonderful way to provide an example of others as to the opportunities to come together in loving unity right here in our own Community.
Yes, kindness is contagious. When people experience kindness, they are more likely to pass it on to others. This can lead to a chain of kindness that can improve the culture of an organization, strengthen relationships, and increase trust.
Here are some reasons why kindness is contagious:
Neurochemical response: Witnessing kindness activates the brain’s reward system, which releases serotonin and oxytocin. Serotonin improves mood and feelings of well-being, while oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone”, controls social interactions.
Social creatures: Humans are social creatures who are hardwired to avoid unkindness and to repeat behaviors that reduce discomfort.
Conformity: People are more likely to conform to the behavior of others around them.
Some examples of kindness contagion include:
· A waiter paying for everyone’s lunch
· Giving the GratiDude a 6-footer for Par
· A woman inviting someone to share her lane at the pool
· A woman introducing another author to her fans and handing out her book
· Not blasting Bob Marley at your house until 9 am so your neighbor Jon can sleep in
And we don’t have to do anything as complicated as making a heavy wheelchair float on water, and what we can do is simply make an effort to stay present in the moment of now through our breath so that we can recognize in our everyday life that might need a little bit of encouragement or even simply a smile or a hello.
These are heroic when you are doing them to benefit other people are sharing that unconditional love and for me you have just earned hero status.
Let’s do the small things that heroes do and stop thinking about ourselves, instead let’s look around for opportunities to share what we’ve been working on and that’s this beautiful attitude of gratitude.
