Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
I believe one way you know what your true calling is when you witness other people doing what you want to do, and it makes you feel a certain way.
That certain way is both good longing, and a bit of a spark if you have yet to begin doing the thing that you want to be or should be doing.
I heard a story recently that it really speaks to the “Princess and the Pea” phenomenon that exists in many people’s subconscious reality every single day. What I mean by the princess and the pea is alluding to the story or the fairytale of the princess who had an incredible bed with in numerable mattresses, however, at the very bottom of all of those mattresses lie, a single P that was enough even through all those mattresses, to disturb the fragile princess.
One of the takeaways from this Fairy Tale is that “true nobility” is not based on external factors such as wealth, status or appearance, but on inner qualities such as sensitivity, kindness, and grace
My buddy owns a restaurant and recently his longtime Chef up and quit. Out of nowhere, it seemed, to go into the Priesthood. Nobody knew he was that spiritual and it shocked the restaurant.
It didn’t shock his neighbors or old friends.
He had been a lay preacher all his life, and he was MISERABLE as a successful Chef.
Now he is a Priest.
And he sleeps like a Baby because he removed the Pea from under his mental mattress.
The metaphor has a lot of legs and is interesting and could be about where you focus your energy and how that comes from where you put your thoughts.
It’s hard to have calm thoughts if there is something that you want to do in your life, a job, or an activity that you’d rather be doing that’s pulling at you, it becomes like that underneath the mattress that’s impossible to forget thinking about.
And furthermore, when you can align your thoughts into recognizing what activities you wish to go after and try, it frees you up and you no longer feel fixated by that little thing that’s bothering you.
For me, I had to get rid of the pee that was more like a bowling ball underneath my mattress, and not a small pee and that was just quitting alcohol.
I already knew I wanted to do activities and things to help other people and to give back however, as far as the specifics went, I really couldn’t even begin to think about that until I could reconnect to my higher-self more clearly without alcohol being a part of my regular routine.
The alcohol was really the bowling ball and I could fall asleep, even if there were a couple of peas left underneath my mattress.
When I look at this video, it reminds me of exactly what I want to be doing and where I want to be.
Staying connected to your own breath and being here in real time in the moment of now allows you to feel all those feelings and to be clear as to what stimulates those feelings within your body and organism.
For example, when I see these kids in Africa, clapping and cheering for their classmates, making their first attempts at swinging a golf club my heart explodes on many levels with joy, and with the thoughts of what we can do here in the United States, even within a few blocks of my house that could listed the same types of joyous reactions from kids that don’t look very different from those kids.
From kids that don’t have a whole lot more resources than those in terms of access to technology and other things, but certainly could have the experience of swinging a golf club and the camaraderie that goes with the greatest game in the world.
So, I feel what I feel, and I make note of what’s giving me those feelings so that I can come back to that and include more of that in my day-to-day life. I want and deserve joy, and I also wish to help others, and I can combine the two of those I have found the ultimate “ikigai”or general sense of purpose.
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that refers to a reason for living, or a sense of purpose. It’s a combination of the words iki, which means “to live”, and gai, which means “reason”. The concept encourages people to find what matters to them and live a life of joy and purpose.
The concept of ikigai originated in the Heian period of Japan, particularly in the Okinawa islands. It was originally rooted in finding joy in everyday aspects of life, such as cooking with friends, watching the sunset, or making tea.
The concept is often explained using a four-circle diagram that represents:
What you love
What you’re good at
What the world needs
What you can be paid for
The intersection of these four circles is where you can find your ikigai
The concept of ikigai has gained popularity in recent years thanks to the book Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles
Keep taking those long, slow, inhales and exhale so that you can take note of what’s really stimulating you and your higher self on a fundamental level.
Awareness pays huge dividends as it allows you to craft your life in a more strategic fashion to include more joy and happiness, which will obviously result in an expanded attitude of gratitude.
