Morning Meditation from The GratiDude

Growing up in the 70s and 80s all the messages and cultural signals around money and wealth always seem to reinforce a rigidness or a starchiness as well as a seriousness and a gravitas.

Money was serious business! That was the message that was reinforced by social norms behaviors, media, and other cultural elements.

Even today, if you go into a bank that is located next to other retail businesses, you can feel a level of formality and often a lack of plants and music and other things that you might see in modern retail settings.

In a bank, you just have the minimum amount of furniture, lots of glass, metal and marble cold, hard, sharp surfaces, and an absence of bright colors usually.

This adds up to a lack of playfulness, and certainly an emphasis on seriousness when it comes to the business of money and capitalism.

I have learned firsthand, and we now know through in numerable studies of businesses and interviews that invoking playfulness in a work or business setting is an extremely effective way to both improve productivity as well as employee satisfaction and morale.

The myth that you can operate in a business setting and flip a switch to a different personality or state of being is exactly the definition of what would be called a non-authentic form of doing business or leadership.

There is no authenticity when you play a role in meeting other people’s expectations whether that is in business or in your overall life.

When you give people permission to express themselves freely and to tap into some of the childlike impulses that they may have regarding joyful expression, you free up the ability for that person to reconnect or stay connected to their higher self and something bigger than them.

However, more importantly than focusing on allowing others to play is to make sure that you give yourself permission to play and that you know it’s OK to laugh and have fun if the major tasks and responsibilities are being taken care of.

Nobody on their deathbed or in the assisted living home, regretted, laughter, telling jokes playing with friends or having fun that will never ever show up on the radar of regret.  I promise you.

All you have to do is take a look at the news and see all of the challenges that folks are struggling with, and the real life natural catastrophes that have both happened and about to go down today and tomorrow in West Florida to realize that life is very short and precious and we need to enjoy it as much as possible.

God and The Universe wants us to have fun I promise.

Yes, being playful in business can improve results:

  • Creativity: Playfulness can inspire creativity and innovation, which can lead to innovative ideas, strategies, and campaigns.

  • Motivation: Playful activities can increase motivation and drive performance.

  • Productivity: Playfulness can enhance productivity by reducing stress, improving concentration, and enhancing critical thinking skills.

  • Job satisfaction: Playfulness can enhance job satisfaction and organizational involvement.

  • Psychological safety: Playfulness can cultivate psychological safety, inclusion, and belonging.

  • Emotional and social skills: Playfulness can enhance emotional and social skills, such as empathy, communication, and trust.

  • Work-related flow: Playfulness can help employees experience work-related flow by making tasks more intriguing and rewarding.

Some strategies for incorporating playfulness into the workplace include:

  • Giving employees more room to brainstorm and ideate

  • Encouraging playful, creative thinking

  • Encouraging all kinds of play so everyone can get involved.

  • Inviting employees to play in their roles

Super huge giant thanks to the mother of my kids and my kids who went to my beachside bachelor to do a sweep for keepsakes and memorabilia, family items and other things that I simply didn’t have time or attention to grab in my haste to make it out of town in the pre-evacuation Mad Max traffic.

For Yadira, the mother of my children, to go over there despite our recent divorce and some of the other uncomfortable situations and conversations that happen around assets and money, it was truly an act of unconditional love and forgiveness mixed with kindness that I’ll never forget.

For her to show our kids what forgiveness looks like and to put family first like this yesterday still chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes today.

Another reminder that life isn’t what happens to you, but instead, you put your focus, and energy determines this life experience.

I’m doing yoga this morning at my favorite local studio here and then at about 11 AM headed west on the I 10 to Tallahassee and then north to Eufaula Alabama where I have an Airbnb for the first few days of the next chapter of my Milton mobile adventure(MMA).

Make every conversation about the person that you’re talking to today by looking them in the eye and projecting love from your heart while you breathe deeply and stay connected in the moment.

Do that for yourself and for the world today.

Lots of prayers today and meditations both to the people recovering in the Carolinas in the Appalachians, as well as to the folks that are about to get pummeled in West Florida, and I hope everyone is simply focused on survival as a living organism and forgets about trying to save their material shit(sorry Madonna, we may be living in a Material World but that won’t help you today in Sarasota, will it?).

The tough times that help you realize what REALLY matters, that is squeezing the Lemonade from the Lemons of destruction and suffering, and  that I celebrate today with my expanding attitude of gratitude.
