Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
If you were to gather a group of soon to graduate Harvard business school, MBA students and trick them into answering the question around “what is the number one cause of failure for startups in the United States?”:
You might get answers like:
Lack of capitalÂ
Poor market research
Did not identify their ideal customer profile.
Great product, but weak supply chain could not deliver.
I could go on and on and on with numerous business and challenges that often lead to the demise and early death of a startup.
But the number one killer?
Not even close.
Fear.
Fear doesn’t just kill startups and make them go away too soon. Fear is what keeps the seeds from sprouting out of the ground that could bloom the beautiful flowers of dreams.
Yes, Folks, fear is often considered a major obstacle to pursuing dreams:Â
Fear can paralyze you:Â Fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown can prevent you from taking risks that are necessary for growth.Â
Fear can lead to self-doubt:Â Fear can cause a spiral of self-doubt and worry before you even start pursuing your dreams.Â
Fear can be present when venturing into new territory:Â Successful people feel fear but do it anyway.Â
Some ways to overcome fear include:Â
Breaking it down into smaller steps:Â Break down your goal into smaller tasks to build confidence and reduce fear.Â
Embracing fear:Â You can only take the first step forward once you embrace fear.Â
Reframing failure:Â Failure is feedback, and feedback is valuable.Â
Practicing noticing your thoughts:Â Notice what thoughts are creating the emotion of fear.
From an energetic standpoint when you have a dream to accomplish or to do something, instantaneously just with that thought, the probability of that thing or action happening has just skyrocketed and has moved to a possibility from an impossibility. The Thought creates the dream and possibility and the mathematical opportunity for that climb to happen.
However, the odds will plummet immediately, if upon realizing a dream, you strap an opposing energy in the form of fear to that dream, and it might look something like this:
“ Who am I to I think I could climb a big mountain when I am just a Midwestern boy who grew up on the flatlands”.
What I did right there to my dream as I just cut the legs right out from under it as it was trying to stand up.
I dug that seed right out from the ground that was getting ready to sprout and threw it into the gutter.
This is what happens when you attach fear to a dream instead of pouring gas on the dream and accelerating it by turning it into a goal through adding dates and specific plan of action and asking for help.
Remember, I have learned that asking for help is the fastest way to get anywhere that you wish to go.
Matthew McConaughey is asking you to get out of your own way in allow the stoplight of your life to turn green by exercising some demons and addressing the fears that you must try something new or to achieve a goal or anything that you’ve been thinking about and not acting on.
The idea here is to tackle your fears directly, take the power out of them by shining a light on them. Perhaps we can take the energy and the power out of our negative thinking by saying it out loud and seeing how silly it sounds when we hear it that way. Â
It’s easier to confront these types of thoughts and negative patterns of behavior when you look at your life as simply an experience of learning and growing.  You haven’t done anything wrong, you’re not in trouble. Nobody’s going to tell on you. We’re just doing the best we can to figure it out as we go along, and we know that dreaming and doing new things is a lot more fun than being scared and cowering in a corner.  We are simply acting on what we know by moving in the direction of joy through allowing our higher self to share the information as to what we could be doing that could really drive our happiness and personal sense of gratification in our own lives.  Â
Never bury your dreams and certainly not bury your fears either and allow both to exist, and then choose which one you wish to put energy into.Â
Will you put energy into fearful thinking and expand your thoughts around that? No, choose breathing to change that thought channel. Â
Breathe and let go and realize those fears are not protecting you from any danger, but instead they are limiting your life experience, so those thoughts don’t serve you and you’re not going to support those thoughts with more energy.
You are going to shift your thoughts to supporting your dream and moving that dream to a goal by adding just one day of a specific action that you’re going to do, such as visiting a website with the trail maps for Kilimanjaro, and you’re already on your way and the odds of that climb again dramatically increased.
Your breath is what allows you to have the clarity to choose where you put your energy and to have thought awareness.  Once you have that awareness and could recognize your thoughts and a clearer by being present, you can move to the next level of what my friend Merril Hoge calls “thought accountability.” Merril’s concept of thought accountability is about making sure that you’re not satisfied with just thinking about doing some of the good things and behaviors, but actually putting it all into motion or “Praxis” as Warren Buffet’s bro Karl Marx wrote in Das Capital.Â
Not sure where to start?
Answer this question:
Am I breathing regularly out of my nose or out of my mouth?
If you can’t answer this question, don’t worry about your dreams right now, worry about your breath and get focused on learning how to breathe properly through your nose and stop holding your breath.
Once you do that, you’ll discover your superpowers, and any dream will be possible.
I’m not joking, even a tiny bit.
I will be breathing and dreaming quite a bit this weekend because this is the annual Kev-A-Palooza festival that has been happening since 1968 on October 5. Â For the last 40 years or so Kevapalooza has stretched out to be a four- or five-day affair and currently includes lots of music, barbecue, beach, friends, solar golf car rolling, boogeying, Â laughing and chilling.
Please feel free to celebrate wherever you are in parallel and send me some good photos won’t get you in trouble down the road and I promise to share some stories of my weekend next week with an attitude of gratitude.
