Morning Meditation from The GratiDude

What you focus on dictates everything.

You could see a car accident and focus on the injuries, or you can see the Heroes Arriving in Ambulances and Medical Vehicles saving lives.

Where do you put your focus?

Same with the News you watch, music you listen to, people you kick it with, Church you go to, etc.

Consuming negative news and media can have a range of negative impacts on your mental and physical health, including:

  • Physical symptoms

The body’s “fight or flight” response can be triggered by upsetting news, releasing adrenaline and cortisol, which can cause rapid heart rate, shallow breathing, and an upset stomach. Other physical symptoms include muscle tension, chest pain, headaches, and sleep disturbances.

  • Mental health symptoms

Negative news can increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, even after just 14 minutes of consumption. These symptoms can be worse if people feel they have no control over the situations they are learning about. Other mental health symptoms include intrusive thoughts, persistent anger, resentment, and diminished interest in activities outside the news.

  • Addictive behavior

Social media can be addictive, with clickbait headlines and algorithms designed to keep people coming back for more.

  • Internalization of feelings

Reading the news online can lead to people internalizing their feelings more, which can cause further emotional and physical damage.

So much of life is dictated by where you choose to put your attention and focus, and your experiences revealed because of that.

In this video, there’s a group of kids that are out being goofball kids and dingdong ditching, and if you look at that on the surface, which might be it.  However, the fact that one of the kids in this group is choosing to use the ring alarm system to leave behind uplifting motivational messages at all the stops, where they dingdong ditch is amazing.

Instead of looking at the kids running around disrupting their neighborhood I’m focused on the one leader who is taking advantage of the opportunity to spread positive energy and uplifting messages.

Likewise, if you look for statistics and data around, what’s really going on in the world in terms of access to healthcare, infant mortality, literacy rate access to clean drinking water all the fundamental measurements of health and wellness in a modern society. All those statistics have improved everywhere in the world steadily for the last 50 years, plus.

When you dig into fact, fullness or truth and data, you find out that we are being presented with a disproportionate amount of catastrophe, demise, and division constantly.

Statistically, it is not an accurate snapshot of what’s going on in collective human society in terms of progress.

I can’t overestimate how important it is that you’re careful with the information and the messages and the programming that you’re taking in every single day.  It is better to sit in silence than to have CNN or Fox News playing in the background while you’re working because the energy of the messaging that’s going on from those types of channels is primarily fear based and subconsciously. You’re consuming those messages internalizing the energy and hearing the words, whether you realize it or not.

The phrase “energy follows thought” means that what we think about is what we feed, and that our thoughts have an energy component. One way to use this idea to help ourselves is to:

  • Notice our thoughts.

Be aware of what we’re thinking about and question if it’s okay to feed those thoughts.

  • Make a list.

Create a mental list of things we can think about that will boost our energy.

  • Acknowledge the positive

Notice and acknowledge what’s right, rather than what’s wrong.

  • Thank our brain.

Thank our brain for alerting us to things that could go wrong, and for trying to protect us.

In a world of dingdong, who are not concerned with other people stand out from the crowd and be the person that takes the opportunity to extend universal positivity and unconditional love even to perfect strangers.

By doing this, we shift other people’s energy and give them something new and positive to focus on and put an energetic ingredient into the recipe mix of their daily life that will improve satisfaction and happiness.

Energy follows thought, and when you can stay connected to your breath it allows you to monitor your thoughts and create a daily and constant practice of thought awareness.

When combined with what my buddy Merrill Hoge calls “thought accountability” (which is an awesome term that I believe he created) you have the opportunity to continue to improve and elevate. When you are calmly listening and paying attention to your thoughts through a connection to breath, you can choose thoughts that allow you to expand those beneficial good thoughts and give them more room to grow and breathe.

Enjoy this week as we approach the harvest moon and give thanks and praises for another gift of life today a kiss on the forehead from creation to improve and expand your attitude of gratitude.
