Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
“Pretty cool rear shocks on that bicycle, huh young man?”
I felt my body freeze, and my first thought was if I should run or if the cop was standing right next to me and that would do no good.
Then I took a deep breath and realize that I was overreacting to the situation because I was standing in the parking lot of a Denny’s outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. I was in trouble with the law. I was not about to be arrested.
However, I was on my way with my girlfriend at the time to meet her father a retired colonel in the Marines. he was a very battle hardened, old-school dude and for that reason, I decided it was the perfect time for me to cut my hair for the first time in about four years.
In the previous years with long hair, I have been living as a hand mount student and worker doing just about anything I needed to or could to make money and paying for my own education in junior college, and then the university of California.
I had also been here and there in different political and social protest activities, mostly around the environment and indigenous rights, and been arrested a few times for civil disobedience, and nonviolent protest.
For that reason, my ears were a little bit perked up and paranoid because I was staring at the brand new mountain bike on the back of the police cruiser there in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They just started using mountain bikes, patrol campus, and other peripheral areas and wooded areas, and this particular officer had volunteered to be one of the early bicycle guinea pig officers.
At the time I was riding a mountain bike every day in California for both recreation and transportation, and was super into all the different components and parts and options for mountain biking.
I started to relax, and I responded to the officer about the rear shocks on his bike, saying that “ I actually save money to put front shocks on my mountain bike after having done 1000 miles in the redwoods coming down, steep inclines, using only my poor body for shock absorption”.
And we both started laughing.
What I had realized was that because of my long haired appearance, I had become accustomed to certain interactions with law-enforcement that followed stereotypical behaviors on both sides.
It was also a great moment of realization that I’m the creator of everything in my life, and that my paranoia and fearful energy, probably precipitated some interrogative behavior and less than warm vibes from my law-enforcement encounters.
Back then I began a little exercise I would do to avoid judgment where when I would see someone and immediately believe I knew what was going on with their situation or predicament I would immediately challenge myself to come up with 10 other scenarios that are just as likely because I really don’t have a clue what’s going on with that person.
On a deeper level, even if you know their situation socially or what they’re doing every single day you still don’t have a clue as to what’s going on internally in terms of their programming and their life experiences and where they are today at this very moment of now.
Which is why I love this video because if you walk through the airport or the train station here and we asked to find a woman that was about to perform with an incredibly beautiful operatic voice you probably wouldn’t have chosen this particular, blind young woman. I’m just saying, there’s a reason why Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles did was so extraordinary.
Listening to her voice, and as you hear the notes use every single note as a gentle reminder to open your heart and your mind and to realize that we have no clue what’s going on with other people what their capable of what their dreams are and all we can do is give them the benefit of the doubt and open up our hearts in that moment, and realize we never lose when we lead with love.
We assume that a person we are encountering as perhaps even had a rough day and maybe we throw a little extra good energy at them. It’s highly unlikely will ever have somebody say “hey whoa there buddy I’ve had enough good vibes today. I don’t know if I can take anymore”.
Ain’t never gonna happen.
A great Friday assignment is to approach strangers as if we already know that they need a boost. Because they do as everyone does.
Including you.
Which is why you read this.
So take the fuel that you have created in your heart and in your mind and share it with others and let the wave roll across humanity and let gratitude spread like water covers the sea.
You know where to find me this weekend: chillin’ like Bob Dylan on penicillin, with my attitude of gratitude.
