The G.I.F.T. Today

Grateful: understanding more and more to use the word “experience” to discuss life, in real time and in general. This word is like a walking stick now for me.

Morning Meditation from The GratiDude

My very first apartment that I rented with my roomie Steve was in Cupertino, a few yards(literally) from the Original Apple Campus.

I had the opportunity to watch the ultimate creative thief in action, the Chief Crazy Copycat, the Experience Synthesizer, Steve Jobs.

Here is what he said about creativity:

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things. — Steve Jobs

All my best ideas and successful ideas have come from copying other smart people or from asking for advice or help.

I can remember back in 1999 in the early ParView, Inc. Golf Car GPS System days here in Sarasota, Florida, as I was contemplating how to put together a sales team and feeling completely in over my head overwhelmed and suffering from a massive case of imposter syndrome.

I realized I had a global expert in strategic sales at my disposal in a gentleman by the name of Ron Zabel, who sadly recently left earth to return to his creator.

R.I.P. Ron, today’s edition is for you my Man. Thanks for all.

Ron was a super dynamic, caring and brilliant business leader who led such huge companies as Sara Lee baked goods and is even credited behind closed doors as the guy who produced the idea for the eggshell packaging for “Leggs” pantyhose back in the 70s.

Google “Leggs” if you don’t recall this, but it was a cultural phenomenon and endemic in every mother and young woman’s closet dresser drawer, or bathroom you would see an eggshell from legs pantyhose. They were everywhere.

Ron help me figure out what type of sales person I was looking for where the position or look for these people how to structure compensation I could go on and on basically everything and without his ideas we never would’ve taken that company from a few million dollars in sales to $20 million in sales and an 18 month span.

Doug Spinella, Steve Boucini, Chris Daniels, Joe Edberg, Brian Smith, Chris Kennedy, and the swaggy Alpha Dog and Fashionable Rainmaker from Boca, Bobby “Bobby D” D’Angelo.

You see Bobby D was a serious golf talent son of Sicilian immigrant parents from New York very good-looking dude with the gift of gab and can walk into the room and completely steal the spotlight with his charisma.

However, he had never gone against ParView and me as a young lunatic in my late twenties and everybody has a plan until you get punched in the mouth.  Bobby got punched in the mouth and lost a big deal and the very next week he drove over to Sarasota from Boca and asked, “what the fuck was going on and how could he jump on board and get a part of this?”.

Sign here Bobby. We like your style and moxie.  Ron Zabel is helping Kevin build a Sales Team. You are in if you agree today.

And that’s how he became a part of this back in the day.

The point is today that it’s OK and even a smart shortcut to an idea to not only ask for help but to simply copy other people’s smart ideas. But don’t be an asshole and give credit to those people like Ron Zabel to make sure that your ego doesn’t get in the way of being open honest and respectful.

Like my bro, Jay Karen from the national golf course owner’s association posted last night from the steps of the former offices of his association, he could never sit on those steps without the founders and mentors that came before him.

All my best ideas have come from advice and from the teachings from people who were kind enough to have taught me.   I have always been simply looking at other examples of success and doing my best to replicate those examples.

What does that have to do with today’s post?  I’m gonna copy what this queen is doing here in this video at the Farmers Market this weekend in Sarasota and film it. Watch the smiles she generates, incredible:

OH THE SMILES! Man, soooooooo good. Taking this idea and copying it asap!

I have to be careful as a single man, though I can’t really be saying it to women my age or younger women because it may seem creepy, but I could definitely say it to just about any guy and lots of women that are a little bit older perhaps that it won’t seem, like I’m hitting on them!

That’s one thing I love about some of the cool clips and post people send me and I get introduced to now is that I see all these creative examples of how to uplift other people, and to share love in a practical way.  Oh, I should say impractical way that doesn’t get you in trouble or get you arrested!

Again, this is the same reason I came up with the gratitude, poker chips so that I could have a conversation starter and a way to express both some teachings and some upliftment and not seem totally out of the blue and creepy(even though most people it is totally out of the blue).

We be careful of is that we’re exposed to not only examples like this that are super great, but also especially from our childhood examples and patterns of behavior that we don’t want to copy.  That’s where the hard work or the shadow work comes into the conversation.

As we work to cultivate our mindfulness and spend more time in the present moment of NOW we will uncover or discover traumas, memories, or experiences that we need to understand and do what is called “integrate “.

We need to process those in a way that takes us out of a victim narrative and into a student perspective of learning, and then simply letting go.

Of course, easier said than done, but when you understand what’s going on, that’s more than half the battle.  You no longer feel lost or confused and you understand you’re going through a process, and you must be patient with yourself because it’s a form of self-love to create awareness and to improve the quality of your thoughts.

This is the building block for having more consistent presence and more enjoyment through elevated moods.

I realize the basics are where I need to focus in my coaching, and I am there now with breath, body and brain in that order as the way to get folks to the point where they could really achieve some great things and make true progress in the pursuit of their own personal greatness.

I’m learning about a lot of people and I’m sharing as much as I can that I could be helpful or relevant but please let me know if there’s anything that you want to hear about or would like me to write about because I do this shit for you. And it’s dark out every morning when I do it.

And I love it.

I want you to love it too.

So, in the words of the brilliant and wise Spice Girls from the UK:

“Tell me what you want, what you really really want”.

And then I’ll go ahead and write about that shit for you because I love you and appreciate you. That’s real. I dare you to get close to me and find out if I love you because I’ll squeeze your ass and hug you and I won’t let go of you, you know it’s true.

Thank you for reading and for taking seriously the importance of your beautiful attitude of gratitude.
