Morning Meditation from The GratiDude
Heroes are not in comic books but behind the register.
If we looked at this man, trembling and shaking, trying to eat and having a very tough time, with anything but compassion it would seem heartless. Yet, lots of folks either choose to ignore his suffering, or like the young ladies in the video, laugh at his suffering.
This is a mentality of separation, of differentness, of Fear. It is sad.
I love the kindness in how she helps him eat, offering a drink. Beautiful.
The reality could only be a feeling of separateness from this man’s suffering could we not want to help.
Separateness is not real, but imagined from a scientific, energetic standpoint, and certainly not from a spiritual standpoint.
Yes, we are technically separate energetic organisms separated by more energy, which is technically no separation at all.
These are different ways to look at the people that are in the living family as humans with us at the same time.
Let’s think about everyone else on earth who is part of a special club that we are a part of as well and that is the club of humans that are alive right now on earth. Because guess what? All of us in 100 years will be dead for the most part, including the ones just recently born.
We’re almost like a graduating class in a high school we’ve shared a common experience in a common place at the exact same time.
Earth-Class of 21 Century
Picture all humans like different leaves on a tree, the Tree of Life. This way, I focus on the fact that even though we may be far apart from each other physically in many ways, the reality is that we are alive together here now and not at all separate.
We are rooted in the same earth.
We are sitting under the same Sun and staring up into the same Moon at night.
It isn’t a heavy lift to acknowledge other people in all your social and even mundane comings and goings with direct eye contact and sincere conversation. A little bit of kindness goes a long way.
Paying attention to the energy and the level of comfort the other person has and making allowances for physical space or for different emotional states or conditions of well-being by remaining present and connected to your own breath.
You stay grounded and connected in your own breath, help strangers relax, and enjoy the interaction that is taking place to a greater degree.
You never know what people are going through and providing kindness and compassion to perfect strangers is always a really good idea and will never be met with scorn.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!-Let’s copy that vibe!

The GratiDude, front left in Mexican pullover hoodie with my Favorite Teacher at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Mr. Turner. Fall 1985
My kid starts school today for their Junior and Freshman years in high school respectively and there’s always new people to meet and new opportunities to share good vibes and positive energy in your encounters.
Can you remember that energy and excitement of the first day of school?
Not just the scary parts but the fun parts, ha ha!
In the spirit of being able to ALWAYS “choose our own attitude”, let’s choose that excited first day of school vibe to the breakfast table this morning.
Expressing gratitude for life by simply bringing enthusiasm is a great way to uplift others and share that energy to transform Monday! We decide to look forward to our encounters with new people, just like meeting new kids at the beginning of the new school year.
For me, the social part is where I really did well in school up until….I got to college and took it a little bit more seriously. Today I’ll stick with my first and best subject, and that’s sharing the love and compassion that I feel in my heart. I’m shooting to be this year’s valedictorian of gratitude, and my diploma will simply say “Summa Cum Laudittude of Gratitude”
