Love and Unity is a Participatory Sport that requires Opt-In/Out. What’s it gonna be?

I was reminded of one of my favorite teachers from elementary school yesterday when I was at the beach at the Ritz-Carlton on Lido yesterday.
That favorite teacher was the only teacher I had every year from kindergarten through sixth grade because he was the Physical Education teacher, Mr. Barret.
Mr. Barret was probably 6 foot three and in his hay day a solid 210 tight black curly hair that became more gray as I got closer to junior high.
Rest in peace Mr. Barret you were loved by thousands and thousands of kids not because of the classes you taught but because of the way you chose your attitude and how you made it about other people and everything you did.
Mr. Barrett was an “Energy Guy” before anyone talked about that or really really knew what that meant. What I mean by this is, and you can check with anybody that went to Eberwhite elementary school in a 25 year period and they will corroborate this about the great Mr. Barrett, he always picked out the kid that needed the most, and gave it to him.
Let me repeat that because it really does deserve repeating: Mr. Barrett could pick a kid out of a lineup within 30 seconds amongst 25 kids whose parents were unhealthy had addiction issues or he was suffering from poverty neglect, or all of the above.
Mr. Barrett would zoom in on Desiree, or Erik, or William, as these are all the kids that;
didn’t dress like the rest of the kids
that didn’t necessarily smell like the rest of the kids
that didn’t get fed like the rest of the kids
And
through no fault to their own, they often had trouble behaving like the rest of the kids.
Over the last five years, I’ve decided that I am going to carry on with Mr. Barrett’s energy and spirit, and always look for people in social situations that appear to be the least like me to uplift them and for others to witness what Love and Unity look like here in the United States of America in 2024!!
In other words, I look for people that have different skin color that have different shapes and that may be of different origins or cultural traditions or backgrounds.
I look for the people that have the least basic physical or obvious things in common from a social perspective, and those are the people that I wish to connect with through love and positive energy.
For many many reasons, this is what I look for every single day and when other people see me the very very square looking white bread wasp, dude getting down with the old Vietnamese lady, talking about food or sharing stories of music with the Rastafarian guy at the beach or hearing stories of Eastern Europe from the old woman in the produce section at Publix as she’s trying to teach me which avocados to pick because “you can’t pick the ones where the stem is falling out because those will go bad really fast” Inga explained to me.
Watch this. My kinda pizza being served here.
Yesterday, a hat blew over to my feet. That was clearly a woman’s hat with a pink scarf tied around it, and I looked over and it came from this Black Family with two kids, and it appeared like the father had long dreadlocks from a distance. Sure enough when he walked over his hair was almost down to his butt, and we exchanged a bright smile as he got closer because he could hear the music that I was playing.
What I did when I saw the hat blow over and who it came from was to not simply return it in a polite way, but to pretend that I was going to keep it and then I really liked it. When Darius, my new Bro’s name, Kim his Wife who lost her hat, walked over to me. I actually was wearing the hat and pretended like I was gonna keep it.
He chuckled at first, but wasn’t sure what he was working with so he said “excuse me, sir, that’s my wife’s hat that blew over here if you wouldn’t mind giving it back, please?”
I looked him cold in the eye and explained that “possession is 9/10 of the law and this hat is now mine”.
I kept a straight face for a couple of seconds, and then started laughing my ass off.
He started laughing and it was a fun moment.
He then asked me about the music. I was listening to as he heard the drumming as he was walking up and got closer.
It was not very common commercial Reggae music at all, but it was reggae music to a trained ear.
It was Nyabinghi style drumming from Count Ossie, one of the original rosters to ever be recorded in Jamaica back in the mid 60s.
Turns out the young man did not know about Count Ossie, nor did he know about Prince Buster bringing the account into the studio to record the first ever traditional indigenous Rastafarian music in with Jamaican popular music that changed the world of music forever.
It wasn’t long before we were all talking as a family and Darius. My new friend asked his wife Kim to take a picture of us so that we could mark the occasion and give thanks and praises to God for our meeting..

Darrius and I kicking Sand in the Devil’s Face at The Ritz Yesterday
Those were his exact words.
Because I was present in the moment of now, and that I was not self-absorbed into some weird ego, thinking about future stuff or past thoughts, I could breathe in the moment slowly and think about how I could create a fun situation to have an encounter to simply demonstrate and to show other people that unity is a participatory sport.
Love and unity requires you to opt in or opt out.
You opt out when you are not present in the moment of now because you aren’t available to receive or send love to anyone.
You opt out when your thoughts are consumed about things that may or may not happen in the future and you miss out on the life that is happening right now.
On the beach that hat with the pink scarf just blows right by you and someone else a few chairs down is the one that returns it to Darius. That other person, who did NOT have their head in the sand, so to speak, gets to meet Darrius and his beautiful family because YOU were asleep at the wheel.
That’s no way to live.
Everyone is here at the beach waiting for you and the music is playing so please take a few deep breaths and come back and join us and be present for your life.
Have some Trust and put away the fear, open up your heart, and see what happens.
Enjoy the show as the fundamental law of the universe, that you get what you put out, proves true, and God returns everything that you serve up with an Attitude of Gratitude.
