I saw a kind person doing something kind. It made me want to be kind, too.

Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
Yesterday was interesting for me and I had this princess and the pea kind of energy going during much of the day. It wasn’t until about halfway through a 6 PM yoga class that I got my energy shifting in the right direction and started to realize that what I was experiencing throughout the day was merely my intuition knocking at the door.
For me, I had this initial thought and feeling as if it was some sort of setback, as if our personal development and life experience is on some sort of linear track of improvement or progress or something like that. That’s all bullshit. It is just an experience and you accept the feelings and emotions as you experience them without judgment. That’s the only way to roll.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on it until I realized it wasn’t anything serious and that I was just getting jammed up about some of my business focuses and realized I just needed a tight tighter direction and to take some options off the table, and to not pursue any new endeavors for the time being.
Resisting getting involved in new and different things is tough for me and requires discipline because quite frankly I’m easily excited and I find so many different things stimulating and worthy of my attention.
Squirrel!
That’s just part of my personality profile as I’ve learned from TypeCoach, and getting a better understanding of some of my inherent proclivities helps me put into place either some practices or disciplines that can help me inform my Blindspot and avoid making mistakes due to the way my mind and emotions tend to work.
If you haven’t checked out, TypeCoach yet hit me up directly and we can have a conversation on it because it’s amazing for organizations as well as individuals. It is the playbook for communication within complex organizations and personalities that demystifies how and why people act and feel the way they do.
It’s interesting because today, even before Dan, I already feel on the lookout for providing some good uplifting energy to other people because I feel like I was at about a B+ game yesterday and I need to make up for it in my community today.
I understand that I have a rare gift of both communication and a comfort level of who I am and what is important to me and because of that height and sense of comfort and awareness, I need to be more risk tolerant and my outward displays of affection and support of perfect strangers because it’s lacking in our current society. In my opinion, of course.
I can also celebrate the fact today that I’m so committed to playing offense now after having gotten through a particularly challenging period of my life. It feels good to have some clarity and some pieces falling into place relative to Kevin 2.0 looks like as I play the back nine with a new perspective.
What is something you could offer up today or how might you feel a pause during an interaction with even just a smile that could change everything?
This is a fun game to play as it keeps you connected to the present moment and to your breath and your day can become like a scavenger hunt seeking opportunities to uplift or to improve someone’s life experience in your own particular or gentle or subtle way.
Me? Not so subtle.
But you do you.
It’s also fun to know that folks that may be witnesses to you doing something cool or nice also get the benefit. We are all just wired to appreciate kindness and love as our default mechanism.
Resistance is futile!!
Yes, witnesses of kindness can experience positive emotional benefits, including increased happiness, empathy, and a sense of connection, as well as feeling more likely to act altruistically in the future.
Here’s a more detailed explanation:
Feeling Good:
Watching someone be kind can trigger positive emotions and make people more likely to engage in similar acts of kindness themselves.
Serving as a Model:
Witnessing kindness can serve as a model for how to act in a positive way, inspiring others to be more compassionate.
Positive Emotions:
Observing acts of kindness can spark positive emotions, such as warmth, joy, and a sense of hope.
Increased Empathy and Compassion:
Seeing others being kind can foster empathy and compassion, leading to a greater understanding of others’ needs and experiences.
Increased Self-Esteem:
Witnessing kindness can boost self-esteem by showing that people are capable of positive actions and can make a difference in the world.
Improved Mood:
Studies indicate that witnessing acts of kindness can improve mood and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
“Moral Elevation”:
Researchers have identified a phenomenon called “moral elevation,” where witnessing acts of kindness can inspire optimism and a desire to act altruistically.
Contagious Effect:
The positive effects of kindness are experienced by everyone who witnesses the act, improving their mood and making them significantly more likely to “pay it forward”.
Oxytocin Release:
Witnessing acts of kindness can trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with love, trust, and social bonding, which can lower blood pressure and improve overall health.
And remember nobody here gets out alive so don’t do what I did yesterday and take things a little bit too seriously and end up dragging down your energy for no good reason.
As I thought about it yesterday evening, I realized that late morning would’ve been a terrific opportunity to do some intense breath work as a way to interrupt my pattern of thinking and feeling and immediately shift everything. I made a commitment that that’s what I’m going to do the next time I have that princess and the pea feeling.
I learned and I grew and I keep going and if I find something shiny, I’m going to bring it back to the nest and share it with all you baby birds because that’s my (chirp) attitude of gratitude.
