Close your eyes and conjure a positive childhood memory. The clarity is staggering.

I average about 10 chips a week.

That’s the number of poker chips I end up handing out and that’s the number of times people that I meet experience a quick miracle of neuroscience.

I’ll start posting these encounters in the future when I have someone to be with me to film but for the last few years, I’ve been content doing this without any documentation or proof that it happens ha ha but it happens every single day virtually and yesterday was no different.

I’ve road trips throughout the south east quite a bit over the last 27 years since I’m first moved to Florida however there’s still tons of small towns that I haven’t visited just because they either haven’t been on the way or I haven’t had the opportunity to stop and check them out.

Yesterday my schedule was chill and fluid so I had a little bit of extra time to check some things out so I pulled into a small town called Newberry, South Carolina that had a historic main street and some other older buildings and stuff to go check out.

To be honest, it was less than impressive and it was so hot that there weren’t very many people walking around and lots of the businesses were closed unfortunately. However, there was a coffee shop open really an ice cream shop and they had some teenagers working there both white and black kids working together that were part of some sort of sponsor youth Work mentorship program.

What are the young women working? There was being shadowed by her little brother who was just hanging out because he had nothing better to do and he was digging hanging out in the ice cream shop(what little boy wouldn’t?).

He was shy, but smiling at me, kind of checking me out and so I engaged with him and asked him if he was the boss and running everything here?

That made everybody else laugh

I went ahead and shared with him a little bit about the gratitude as I asked the group and him specifically what they are grateful for.

I asked them why Superman always chose to wear that outfit when really Clarke didn’t need it to fly.  Why the anonymity? Why did he not want to take credit for doing great things?

So we talked about that and I asked them what it would look like if Superman right now flew through Newberry and saved somebody and then tried to come in here and just get an ice cream cone.  Would everyone leave them alone?

Would they know how the person was doing that he saved or would they be more interested in meeting and getting a Picture for Instagram?

I then let the young man know that I didn’t save a baby or anyone else, but I did save myself from myself when I unwound a lot of the things that I told myself that simply weren’t true.

I explained that when you’re young, you have to make sure that when you have bad experiences or you’re around people that aren’t happy or healthy that you don’t take things to heart that could hurt your ability to love yourself and to be good to yourself.

I explained to him that I, too, have a superpower, however I can’t fly.

When I leave here, I bet you will believe and agree with me that it is a superpower.

Here’s how I’m gonna show you young man I want you to repeat out loud and say it like you mean it: “ I’m gonna bet on myself!”

The first time he said, it was not too bad actually, but his big sister prodded him and said “come on dude you can do better than that!”.

That little 10 year old dude up with lungs like a lion and eyes of steel and looked me dead in my eyes and said authoritatively and loudly such that everyone in the ice cream shop turned around and and almost shouted “I’M GONNA BET ON MYSELF!!!!”

We high-fived like we just won the Super Bowl and the smile on his face was literally ear to ear.

I explained to him that his mind loves to hear his own voice and craves to hear it every single day to remind him that he is a child of God that he is loved, and he has a unique path in this life to do great things.

I asked him how he felt after saying that and he told me that “ I didn’t wanna smile to show everybody how I was feeling when I started to say that, but I couldn’t stop smiling…. It was like my mouth had a mind of its own!”

How incredible is that?

And the last thing you said is what almost brings me to tears today and then he told me that: “Nobody ever told me it was OK to talk to myself and say nice things. People say bad things themselves all the time and I didn’t know you could just anytime you want say good things like that.”

And for me, this is like a message directly from my creator to tell me that I am on the correct path and that choosing this direction for my life is my true calling.

I don’t know if I could be any happier more satisfied with my life as I walked out of that ice cream shop, knowing the gift that I just given that young man. No business deal, no meeting with Donald Trump, no TPC 30 Golf Course Deal, no massive liquidity event, NOTHING feels better than THIS. My Path. My Life.

As was leaving he told me “man, I don’t think I’m gonna forget this”.

I looked at him and told him that I knew I wouldn’t and I thanked him for the opportunity to meet him.

On to the next stop, as I go looking for more places to plant seeds for trees that I’ll never sit under because my path is the path that shares an Attitude of Gratitude.
