I check with 8 year old me to make sure 80 year old me will be happy as a pig in poop.
On This Day of June 14, 1976, the 8 year old Kevin Carpenter won the Hula-Hoop, Softball Toss, 40 Yard Dash AND the Rope Climb on the same day, the Annual Field Day at Eberwhite Elementary School in Ann Arbor, Mi.
1976/77….Other than Jimmy Carter, I don’t know who else might have peaked harder than Kevin Carpenter that year.

I don’t know who had a better year in 1976 either myself Little towheaded Kevin Carpenter in Ann Arbor, Michigan playing his ass off his toe all summer sledding all winter with zero fu(%s given for anything at all except pure play, joy, learning, and laughing.
Another dude that had a big ‘76, the peanut farmer down out of Georgia, who came out of nowhere to win the presidency, Jimmy Carter, He had a pretty good 1976 as well(prayers up for President Carter, about to leave the earthly dimension after being a humble servant working for Habitat for Humanity for over 40 years after leaving Washington. Pretty damn impressive to reject material pursuits for Godly work).
When I came out of my alcohol induced haze of anxiety and worry and self doubt and landed back on my feet in the solid fashion and realized that I had the rest of my life in front of me, I had the question exactly how do I wanna live the rest of my short existence here on the blue ball known as earth.
I decided I would look backwards to that eight-year-old version of me and zero in on the things that brought me joy and where my heart was directing me back then is probably the perfect place to pick back up.
As I hatch this new plan, the other version of myself that I’m keeping in mind is the 80-year-old version of myself the guy in 2049 working on his garden somewhere in northern Michigan or Sarasota, Florida, depending on the time of the year, and what’s my level of joy, contentment and happiness at that age. I realized a few years ago that all of my decisions are going to dictate whether that 80-year-old version of me will be as happy as the eight-year-old version of me was.
So….if you’re following me now…. I’m confessing the fact that I’m living now to make sure that the 80-year-old me is absolutely happy as a pig and shit as I put around my garden acting like an old Japanese man in a Zen Monastery working on his bonsai bushes or something.
How do I make make decisions today that I know will be approved of the future me?
The only answer is to make decisions based upon something that will be unwavering and unchanging, and that’s the essence of my higher self and my connection to my faith and to something much bigger than me.
This source of information, faith, love, joy and abundance will guide me every step of the way as it did when I was very young and before I got confused, scared and traumatized.
Simplifying your focus in this regard may seem over simplistic, however, I beg to differ.
It may sound basic, however it’s very difficult to do in practice in a modern society, or to stay energetically clear in the present moment of now is tough. We have all of the information clutter and messaging that’s coming into our reality every single day.
Having a longer perspective of life versus making sympathetic nervous system panic decisions, based upon fear or reacting to other peoples pressures leads to a life that doesn’t feel satisfying or aligned with your values or beliefs. When you’re living a life that isn’t fully connected in terms of your faith and all of your highest and most important concerns you end up vibrating at a frequency and is far more difficult to stay happy and content when you’re out of alignment(Your sympathetic nervous system is a network of nerves that helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” response. This system’s activity increases when you’re stressed, in danger or physically active. Its effects include increasing your heart rate and breathing ability, improving your eyesight and slowing down processes like digestion.)
Focusing on fundamentals and coming back to basics like positive self-talk, building yourself an affirmation for yourself that you say every day OUT LOUD that covers all aspects of your life, and surrounding yourself with people that are extremely encouraging and positive are the cornerstone building blocks to building a healthier life and mindset which benefits everyone in your life, especially your employers and your family and friends.
We are starting to recognize that self-care mental wellness and investing in these practices are not selfish or a waste of time or money, but instead incredibly vital and literally equivalent to putting on the oxygen mask in an emergency situation on an airplane. Wearing the mask, or getting honest and committed about your own wellbeing and mental health is not just a good idea, it’s literally the only way you’re going to survive and enjoy this very brief existence.

Will you join me and live for your eight and 80-year-old self today?
Hopefully, both of you are still potty trained, able to locomote under your own volition and thinking clearly and soundly at your respective ages ha ha.
Don’t complicate your life by taking on other peoples agendas or values.
Don’t look for answers outside of yourself when you know you have all the answers inside.
Don’t associate with Assholes.
And if you do anything at all today, start with being kind to yourself and giving yourself a break because this life is really hard and we’re all just doing our best to be the best versions of ourselves.
