Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
When I think back to the exercise that is commonplace in all societies everywhere and that is to ask young children what they want to do when they are no longer children and they become adults.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
What do you want to BE?
Huh.
Let’s unpack this a little bit because I’m not sure I’m with it 100% anymore.
When you ask me as a little kid what I want to be when I’m no longer a kid and when I’m a grown-up, are you telling me I can’t me that the Me that I am now, I can’t be THAT Me later?
This version of me right now, albeit small and not as hairy as you grown-ups are, I still like what I’m doing and how I’m doing it even though I don’t have a lot of responsibility in my life other than getting up and walking to school and back every day.
But I get it.
I need to do something to be able to buy Christmas presents for my kids and pizza and stuff like that so I must find a way to get people to give me money.
Got it.
I believe we need to slow this process down and to spend more time helping kids understand all of the different things that they enjoy that they find interesting and that make them happy.
Yes, embracing certain “childlike” qualities, like curiosity, playfulness, optimism, and a sense of wonder, can positively impact your health by reducing stress, enhancing creativity, fostering social connection, and promoting a more positive outlook on life, which can contribute to overall well-being.
Key points about being childlike and health:
Reduced stress:
A playful attitude and ability to find humor in situations can help alleviate stress and tension.
Increased creativity:
Children naturally explore and experiment, which can inspire creative thinking in adults who tap into that mindset.
Positive emotions:
Maintaining a childlike optimism and perspective can lead to increased happiness and a more positive outlook on life.
Social connection:
Playfulness and openness can facilitate better relationships with others.
Openness to learning:
A childlike curiosity encourages continuous learning and exploration of new experiences.
Important distinction:
Childlike vs. Childish: While “childlike” refers to positive qualities like wonder and curiosity, “childish” often implies immature behavior, which is not beneficial.
This means that kids need to be exposed to a wide variety of activities, thoughts, and opportunities so that they can experiment, try different things, and see what sticks or even what they may have a natural proclivity or talent for.
For example, if a child grows up in a rural setting and doesn’t have access to musical instruments(other than creating his own percussion sounds with his hands), she/he will be limited as to their understanding of any musical inclination or talent they may have. Until Ray Charles sat down at the piano and stroked those ivory keys and heard that sound and it ignited something in his soul, he may have had no idea he was going to be a piano player.

This is where mentorship, nonprofits, after school programs, Boys and Girls club, Girls Inc. Every Kid’s Sport, First Tee, all of these provide new and different opportunities for young people to try things that may not be available in their household or in their neighborhood from an accessibility standpoint are so vital.
Going back about 25 years I first volunteered for Big Brothers here in Sarasota and I did it in California as well and those were wonderful experiences. During those times I traveled a lot, I was single and not really plugged into the local community so an organization like Big Brothers was efficient and easy and it allowed me to contribute a little bit of time and not wait for it to happen organically.
Most of us have opportunities through either work or church or through parenting to have regular chances to mentor to share our knowledge to teach and to help other people, especially younger people that could use some guidance or advice. You don’t know who is open or in need of some guidance or help so I would suggest that you just keep it as an open end offer to as many people as you think you can handle from a bandwidth standpoint and just finish messages or correspondences or conversations with something like “hey if you ever need anything and it doesn’t have to be work related, shoot me a text or holler at me. I don’t care if it’s the weekend or whatever I’m here for you.”
That opens the door and as I like to say regularly, when the student is ready, the teacher always appears.
