Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
Even if we are fully present, mentally, and emotionally, all of our best efforts can fall short. We overshoot our target, our timing was off, or we misjudged the energy of the other players we are participating with, in any case the result is something less than what we had hoped for.
This is going to happen almost every day for us so the real question is how are you going to recover?
This could be a big learning opportunity, which most people call failures(that word is so full of baggage and bullshit and fear and generally speaking, keeps people from trying anything because they’re so scared of failing that’s a whole other blog topic I think), or something small such as a typo in an email.
No matter how big or how small the situation, the event, or the outcome treating yourself with kindness and grace in facing your shortcomings is always the rule of engagement. It does no good to beat yourself up when you find yourself making a mistake when instead you should be celebrating the spirit of giving a shit and noticing you made a mistake and caring.
As I’ve written here before, I learned this lesson firsthand when I was caught by a world-renowned neuroscientist, Mr. Joseph McClendon III calling myself an idiot for making a mistake in an email I was rereading that I had already sent to a golf course owner. This was in 2002 in Doran Andry’s opulent offices in the Irvine Orange County area.
When Joseph a.k.a. “Coach” pulled me into the conference room and explained what I was doing to myself by talking to myself that way and conversely what the opportunity was to begin positive self-talk through daily affirmations. It was a life-changing moment that I’ll never forget.
This experience was made possible through the kindness of Doran Andry who I was visiting that day to go have lunch with and mentored me and was completely generous opening kind with a guy that he just met on an airplane only months prior.
So just like Coach called me into the conference room and explained to me the magic in the power of neuroscience for our own personal happiness and self-development, I am likewise committed and I feel obligated to share all these tricks and hacks with all of you because I love everyone everywhere all the time every day.
That’s how I feel.
This applies to your moment-to-moment life by being forgiving and kind to yourself when you notice that you have become disconnected from your breathing. Even wise old yoga instructors will tell you that everyone gets disconnected from their breath, some more often than others and the key is just being kind and graceful in the return.
A way to look at it is in your internal dialogue instead of saying “look what you’ve done you’re holding your breath. This is why you’re feeling anxiety. You need to start breathing regularly right now!”
You can instead be kind and have fun and say something like” wouldn’t it be nice to be present and to take a deep breath right now?”
Yes, higher-self, it would be cool to come back to the generous present moment of now.
I’ll take that deep breath now thank you.
To come back to the present moment, you can practice mindfulness techniques like focusing on your breath, paying attention to your senses, noticing your physical sensations, engaging in grounding exercises, and actively bringing your awareness back to “here and now” whenever your mind wanders to the past or future.
Key practices to bring you back to the present moment:
Mindful breathing: Deep, conscious breaths can anchor you to the present moment.
Sensory awareness: Notice sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures around you.
Body scan: Pay attention to physical sensations throughout your body, like tension or relaxation.
Meditation: Practice formal meditation to train your mind to focus on the present.
Mindful movement: Engage in activities like yoga or walking while actively observing your body’s sensations.
Gratitude practice: Reflect on things you are grateful for to shift your focus to the positive aspects of the present.
Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings to process emotions and gain clarity.
Nature immersion: Spend time outdoors to connect with your surroundings.
Life is a series of opportunities to learn and grow it can be as simple as how do I stay connected to my breath during the day so I can enjoy more of my life or it might be how do I recover from this major life situation I have from a failed business, the ending of a relationship, shifts in economics or politics, or perhaps even other things that are outside of your control like a natural disaster such as the fires or hurricanes that we experience here in the United States .
It’s about coming back to your breath, practicing the basics of self-talk and self-love getting yourself grounded, and then reviewing the information you have at hand in a calm way and making the best decision that you can at that moment.
Reminder: when you have two choices, always choose the one that is more exciting. Hard stop. Then, after that choice, you may come to a few more choices. Again, choose the choice that is more exciting.
Do you see the pattern here?
This is living your life with the pursuit of joy and happiness and abandoning unnecessary fear. Limiting beliefs do nothing but restrict our own flight like clipping a baby bird’s wings.
Let the bird fly, baby.
Chirping with an attitude of gratitude.
