Morning Platitude from The GratiDude

Our lives have become so soft and safe that we have no tangible way to test our true capabilities unless we encounter unforeseen circumstances or difficult challenges.

The times of struggle and challenge are when we really can shine, as we are forced to dig deep and muster what it takes to get the job done.

This is especially true when we’re going through tough emotional and psychological times in our lives when we’re feeling limiting beliefs as we get out of our comfort zone and stretch ourselves, it is natural to have doubts.

What I like to tell myself is that when I’m experiencing doubts and fears I accept those with grace however I realize that those are not appropriate for this particular situation and that what I’m experiencing is an emotion that is limiting my ability to enjoy my life experience, and that any sort of discomfort at such times should be reframed as the challenges that happen when you are learning and pushing yourself.

Yes, surprises can be beneficial, particularly when they are positive or lead to new learning. They can help us focus our attention, build resilience, and even increase emotional intensity in a positive way.

Here’s why surprises can be good for us:

Increased Attention and Motivation:

Surprises trigger our brain’s pleasure center (the dopamine system), which helps us focus our attention and increase motivation.

Memorable Experiences:

Surprises make experiences more memorable, especially positive ones, as they are more likely to be coded in long-term memory.

Resilience and Adaptability:

Unexpected moments can help us build resilience and adaptability in the face of uncertainty.

New Perspectives and Insights:

Surprises can lead to new insights and perspectives, helping us look at situations in new ways.

Emotional Intensity:

Surprises can intensify our emotions, making both positive and negative experiences more impactful.

Breaking Routine and Boosting Vitality:

Surprises can help us break out of routines and bring more vitality to our lives, according to 4D Human Being.

Social Bonding:

When we orchestrate surprises for others, we can create positive chemical reactions in their brains, also impacting the brains of those around them, notes Melissa Hughes.

Learning and Adaptation:

Surprises, even negative ones, can help us learn and adapt to new situations, as explained by Illumine Therapy.

At my former company, GPSI going back about 10 years, our Private Equity investors and CEO wanted to diversify our technological offerings and offer solutions outside of the golf industry and our partnership with ClubCar. After a lot of research and analysis, we decided to leverage our telematics hardware and software technologies into the industries of student transportation, and the motor coach industry.

The idea was to ensure Club Car would buy us, and give them the notion that if they didn’t we would get swallowed by Verizon, or a Telematics player.

It worked.

I knew absolutely zero about these industries, Student Transportation and Motorcoach, after having spent over 20 years in golf and I was way out of my comfort zone.

I wanted NOTHING to do with a new industry, I was crushing golf after a long time of trying and was happy being successful on the scorecard at work.

New things meant getting out of my comfort zone, which I finally did, and when I embraced it and had fun with it, everything changed.

I found a way to make it fun and to lean into the experience and enjoy being the new guy.

I suddenly didn’t have the answers. I had to ask a lot of questions. It was humbling, but I also had a lot of experience that I could draw upon. That was unique and different from other people in these industries, which I decided I would use as a competitive advantage.

“ Trusted telematics, from fairways to freeways”

Are you fucking kidding me?

People loved it in the Motorcoach industry, absolutely loved it.

David Saslow and I came up with that and people gobbled it up when we rolled into trade shows with buses and motor coaches and we had a putting green at the front of our booth and people asked what the connection was between our telematics and a putting green and it was all just a big set up.

At the end of the day, having fun with the gameification of my experience and letting go of my fear is what allowed me and my partners to find some creative solutions and to get the job done.

Just like the Zamboni driver who thought he was settling in for another day of cleaning ice, and he ended up strapping on the equipment and getting behind the goal and saving the day for this NHL team.

Keep your mind and your eyes open, and you never know what opportunities to grow and learn might happen today as we celebrate another gift of life with an attitude of gratitude.
