Morning Platitude from The GratiDude
What I never could have anticipated, and what would have been impossible to fully grasp, is how much hot yoga prepares you for the mental strength and fortitude to complete difficult tasks.
You have no choice but to connect to your breath to focus on your process and to believe you can finish a pose that lasts 60 seconds long.
60 seconds of standing on one leg.
Of standing on one leg while you’re holding the opposite foot, which is not touching the ground.
Furthermore, while you’re holding that opposite foot, you’re going to kick that foot away from your body, pulling your hand arm and shoulder away from the centerline of your torso.
Once you have started kicking back, you must lift your opposite arm, the same side of the leg that’s touching the ground and start leaning your torso towards the front of the room where you are facing.
Keep in mind you were doing this while you were kicking your opposite foot towards the opposite wall, stretching your body in two directions. Kicking and stretching in equal forces in opposition.
The room is 105° and at this point in the class approximately 20 minutes into practice, you are sweating profusely, and it is all you can do to keep a grip on your foot in the air with your hand.
The first 10-15 seconds are no big deal and in many classes, the instructor will let you know at the halfway point and simply say “30”.
In the class I did yesterday, a 75-minute hot Bikram consisting of the 26 poses at body heat studio here in Sarasota, they also give you an audio queue with 15 five seconds remaining. This allows you to go for a final kick or spread at the end to use a racing analogy.
Last year I took approximately 300 classes of yoga, different modalities, and different studios, however, just about all of them had one common ingredient or thread of the experience, and that was at one point during the class a part of me in my mind told me to stop what I was doing in the pose or to quit because it was really fucking hard.
But I never quit or ever listen to that voice because I know that voice is bullshit and it’s just the voice of fear, uncertainty, and doubt that I could extinguish with just a few deep breaths.
So, I kill that thought by starving it and not giving it any energy and return to my breath and focus on the process of executing the pose.
And when it comes time to do hard things or to finish a job, I’ve already pictured or envisioned what that success or that finish job looks like and there’s absolutely zero doubt on whether I will finish it.
Finish the job, no matter how tough it is to do so. Like this Reporter.
Yes, exercising can build self-confidence. Physical activity can improve your self-esteem and make you feel more comfortable with yourself.
Why exercise can build self-confidence
Improves cognitive function
Aerobic exercise supplies your brain with oxygen and nutrients, which can improve your focus and alertness.
Increases self-efficacy
Regular exercise can improve your sense of self-efficacy, which is your belief in your ability to succeed.
Increases self-worth
Resistance training can improve your physical self-worth and global self-worth.
Other ways to build self-confidence
Set goals: Set goals that are achievable and work towards them.
Practice meditation: Meditation can help you feel more relaxed and confident.
Listen to music: High-energy music can help boost your mood.
Reflect on your accomplishments: Consider what you’ve achieved and how it demonstrates your abilities.
Be kind to yourself: Try to recognize what you’re good at and be compassionate towards yourself
I wasn’t always this way, and I could remember hearing through a back channel that a VP of a massive golf management company said something like “typical GPS Industries, great idea, but not quite finishing the job”. Ouch.
But they were right and in a way there’s a compliment in there when you have gratitude because really they were saying was that “I see greatness in you and your results aren’t always great”.
Points well taken and accurate for my past self.
I believe part of that was self-sabotage by not wanting to believe that I could finish and do incredible and wonderful things out of a lack of healing past traumas that precluded me from being able to love myself as deeply as I do today.
And hopefully I will love myself even more tomorrow.
I can’t believe that it’s my 28th PGA Show this week and I’ve never been more excited or more positive or optimistic about myself personally within the space in the golf industry as well as the optimism I have for the golf game, the business, and the industry.
It’s like all of us have never been healthier.
Now I want to share this week with everyone in Golf the fact that G4 has the tools and specific practices to make golf industry employees healthier immediately.
AND
My partner TypeCoach has theprograms to allow those healthier employees to thrive with organizational communication tools and a new type of self- knowledge and understanding of others in their organization.
Less burned out employees, greater engagement, more stability and growth means more revenue.
And of course, I’m super excited to be riding the unicorn that is ZIGIT (shameless plug here: ( https://www.firstcallgolf.com/industry-news/release/2025-01-16/five-tampa-area-golf-clubs-partner-with-zigit-to-transform-on-course-beverage-service ).
Team ZIGIT has put in a TON of work over the last year and there’s a big release going out today about TPC Tampa being installed specifically. I love the people that are behind the SaaS platform, and the fact that they’re committed to growing the Grateful 4 Org and other worthy causes through an emphasis on philanthropic give back.
It’s incredible that I get to grow a company and a technology platform providing business solutions that’s also going to drive the future growth and the rollout of grateful for golf and other Grateful 4 organizational programs.
